@Mallas, sounds like a good time, looking forward to joining in for more events like this upon my return. Salut! So far given the level of gameplay, statistically speaking, we would have had 2 hackers on our old server. Currently, we have had none on the new one, a few false positives but no one actually hacking. While we are sure at some point we will be hacked with the security we have the hackers job is much more difficult and the players are much more satisfied. Good times. -

1. @Airfell, the ping has been increased by 20%. 2. We had 15 to 16 online last night at the same time for several hours. 3. So far, the first 24 hours have been a success. 4. We received about 20 new white list applications since server start. At this rate we should be reaching 20 online at the same time during peak by the weekend. 5. Later this week we will be adding some non loot table weapons as part of the storyline. To reiterate, we always release storyline gear publicly and its documented. Admins are not allowed to use this storyline gear (unless they trade or kill someone for it and can document it). In sum, we try to do our best to ensure all players have an equal chance to get it. For any interested, the whitelist application is in the OP of this thread. -

The server will go live at 2200 CET on 21JAN2013. Please apply for whitelisting as mentioned in the OP. Here is a bit of roleplay and admin positioned loot cache for the kickoff. .....If you find this message it is likely you are reading the words of a dead man. I am the leader of the 116 detachment sent to secure the Islands of Taviana. 116 was placed under a joint NATO / CSTO command and transported to HMS OCEAN on station in the Baltic Sea. Shortly after arrival 3 LRRP teams were inserted on the islands to set up listening posts. Radio contact was established yet lost shortly before an infected outbreak on HMS OCEAN. 116 members were below decks and had no access to weaponry and decided to secure life boats and abandon ship. During our move towards the life rafts several explosions rocked the ship and we became split up and it is unknown how many of us managed to make it to the Islands alive, my fear is not many. This note is being written from a life raft shortly after the NE island of Taviana came into view on the horizon. Last radio contact came from outside of Kopech from the LRRP teams...after surveying the beach for survivors I will be headed there to see if any of our recon teams are still alive. If any 116 member comes across this note consider our original mission cancelled, our mission now is to survive until further orders. Good luck and godspeed. S! GameMaster HINT! (These messages may contain clues to areas where there may be possible gear. Keep in mind since this is public there may be many going for the same gear at the same time). -

Update: 1. Signups. Over the last 3 days. 18 members of the 116 have signed up for the whitelist. 42 public players have signed up. The goal is 300 on the whitelist within two weeks of launch. 2. Launch The launch will occur anywhere from late tonight to early Monday morning. All of those that sign up prior to launch will be informed by email at least 4 hours in advance so that everyone gets a fair start at a fresh server. Signup link in OP. 3. Equipment at Spawn. Non 116 members will receive: 1 Backpack, 2 Bandages, and a flashlight. 116 members will receive: A custom soldier skin. 1 bandage a military flashlight, and no backpack. An interesting scenario would be if a bandit kills a 116 member before they put on their uniform and then impersonates one of us to move behind our lines and cause mayhem. -
Summary. Most of you know that derivatives of the ARMA engine are used by various armies around the world for training. If I were head of business development for DayZ / Arma I would develop partnerships with companies that develop gear popular with preppers in order to give those preppers an opportunity to "test gear in the field" before using it. On the otherhand, I think it would make gameplay more immersive and interesting while broadening the marketplace for both the real life equipment as well as ARMA2 and DayZ...There would be a significant amount in crossover sales due to the two distinctive markets share common purchasing habits. Making it work.... Gilmore and Pines wrote the book Authenticity...stating consumers want something that is genuine. Therefore, the implementation or boarding process of getting real gear into the game should be well thought out....here would be an example. 1.Business development manager works out business details with equipment producers (This step could be handled differently but due to length limits will limit it to this point only). 2.A board of expert reviewers and item developers work together to translate real world equipment performance to in game performance to strive for the feel of the product. Product Ideas examples. 1. Nightvision gear...Nightvision differs greatly in performance (and price). Currently only 1 generic night vision feel exists, but more choices will change magnification intensity, field of view, field of depth, scope compatibility and so on...Imagine for a moment being able to mount an 2 million candlepower IR spotlight on a pole pointing in a given direction and then covering that arc of IR light from a separate location. 2. Civilian versions of military weapons...Semi auto versions of all of the above...more slots for all those rails..for example with an eotech and aimpoint options for their respective magnifiers. 3. The little things...a steel strike for lighting fires with 10,000 strikes, as opposed to waterproof matches with 20 or 50 uses. 4. There are already a series of companies marketing their gear to appeal to the zed apoc.... http://www.gerbergear.no/Apocalypse Hornady bullets... and so on. Sure, a lot of the products are a bit gimmicky, playing on the "tacticool" aspect however, many there are many products on the marketplace that people would like to try out firsthand..and all those products would add to gameplay a great deal as the further DayZ develops as a survival simulation via more immersion it will provide and thereby, realize the goal of "its your story".

Do we have any economists in the room? No? Good, lets talk about them. :-) What determines oversupply of servers is relative as just because a server has 50 slots does not mean the average player is looking for a server either at or near capacity. However, there is no shortage of empty servers, and that would be a definitive sign of an oversupply of servers... unless we want to accept that servers have peak time periods. For arguments sake, say a server has about 14 to 16 hours of peak time per day with 10 to 8 hours of off peak. Given the above and modified as you see fit do you think there are too many servers out there? Now, lets narrow it down, what is the standard expectation of a server for the average player? Either a highly active admin-ed server or a whitelist server or both. When we have actively admin-ed our server we have had hackers but we have never had repeat hackers as far as we know. Hacking usually only becomes a problem for us when we are a mid to high populated server. Therefore, if we were to get serious about hosting, then it would seem nearly impossible not to use a whitelisted server if we were expected to run at 40 plus concurrent players everyday...as at that level, there seems to be about a 50% chance of getting hacked for a non white listed server per day...that is not a scientifically proven number, just an observation so any feedback is appreciated. So, lets assume, that the average player is looking for a server with between 5 and 30 players with the outliers on the low side due to they are just starting out on a new server and many like to do that alone or with a low pop if they do not have a good deal of game experience. WIth those numbers, the non white-listed server probably faces between a 5 and 50 percent chance of being hacked on any given day. Opinions? Now, on the otherhand, if a server admin has the responsible goal of creating a solid server then they are not going to be able to effectively admin it without a few tools. 1. For example, its important to be able to parse log files in real time and a lot of server hosts do not allow this functionality. In fact those that do not I would not consider hosting with, as from experience being with a host like that makes watching the logs a pain in the butt. 2. Bliss seems to be key...a bliss server offers a great deal of tools to the admin not available on many hosts. 3. When we started hosting our DayZ server it was done because a few of us wanted to have fun. This is the utterly wrong approach, and you will not end up having any fun if you do not know how to effectively admin your server and have the people dedicated there to do it. I strongly caution to only host a DayZ server if you can enable white listing and have a staff to run it correctly. Doing anything less is like letting your children go to a convention where all the attendees arrive in vans with candy. So, my final question is, is there an oversupply or under-supply of whitelisted and heavily adminned servers who act responsibly towards their player base and not just the inside group? Is there a timezone/map/configuration sweet spot in the market that is likely to be popular with a healthy player base? I am not really asking anyone to answer this question on my behalf however, if you are considering hosting a DayZ server I would sincerely hope you would ask yourselves those same questions. There is a preponderance of servers hosted by people and groups who have no business doing so because they do not have either the talent or dedication to do so properly. Please do not be one of those people.

Hello, Looking for another father and son or mother and daughter teams to survive with in DayZ. Our time zone is GMT +1 and times online are roughly 1900 to 2200 up to two days during the week and 4 hours on either a Saturday or Sunday once a week. Sometimes more sometimes less. We play the game in a relatively disciplined...slow is smooth, smooth is fast style. We take calculated risks. Generally do not shoot unless first shot at, however, we hunt bandits actively and that usually is our main activity. We play the game as more of a simulation then video game...but in the end its still a game. Oh, we are patient and friendly and although we sound like hard cases we really are not ...just a bit disciplined. Our word is our bond. We accept others break theirs but we dont break ours. We speak the Scandinavian languages, are semi ok in Spanish, and English is our mother tongue. So, any of those languages is ok for us..Oh, we may swear in German sometimes for comedic effect.

As long as us anglophiles try to speak French we are largely forgiven by the French for things we are not responsible for. Honestly, English is a foreign language for me, because I was raised American, where I was taught to speak 'Merican. My wife is from Scandinavia and over the years we have lived or worked in all three countries so the language has rubbed off to the point of I can fool Swedes into thinking I am Norwegian, and Norwegians into thinking I am Swedish...if I do not say too much...but the Danes know right way..they just cannot be fooled so easily. In school my wife and I studied second languages and as what happens to many students we dont really learn them...sadly, I can only speak world war II german... Angref! Snell! Macht snell! We want to retire in Central America and out oldest studies it so once or twice a week we have a Spanish night...where all words are in Spanish and the iPads are close at hand for when we get stuck and need a translator. Cheers! -
Its a good diary of your 1st mission together with your "friends". Keep on writing. A bit of satire..... 1. You mention you made your friends buy the game. Typically, people do not have formal authority over their friends, so it reminded me of the 1982 RIchard Pryor movie "The Toy" and that you were an affluent white kid who had his father buy him some playmates. This is reinforced later in the game by your hoarding of the DMR in your backpack. My question is how much did you buy your friends for? And are you this mean to everyone? :) 2. The zombies "foolishly" chased us. Zombies is capable of thought would chase you as a matter of normal behavior, if they did not chase you and they could reason then that would be foolish. However, as far as I know, zombies do not reason and therefore they are not capable of being foolish...or brave...or possessing any trait those capable of reason are. 3. My friend was pinned against the wall by the sniper. I envision a sniper shooting a gun loaded with throwing knives. 4. We were on our way to Mogilevka.....for 90% of the readers you may have well said you are on your way to the house two blocks down to the west from yours. Rather, we were on our way to XXXX, a small town, about XXX from a major landmark most people who play the map would know...such as next to the wardrobe that leads to Narnia. 5. More theatrics. You should have used 1 of those Jerry Cans as a zombie or player ambush weapon by shooting it from afar when enemies were near. One of your friends should have shot another one of the friends with the crossbow in the butt, that sort of thing is always funny. Sure there is action...but where is the love story...I know me and at least 1 other reader on this forum are always looking to hear about more romance in DayZ.....one of your other friends could have killed a zed and then realized it was his former girlfriend who turned...and that he still had his lucky condom that he never got to use in his wallet...or that it began to rain and you were all so cold you had to cuttle up in the tent together at your campsite on brokeback mountain...which is a bit north of the hershey highway and the old dirt road. :) 6A. Stop and set up some ambushes every now and then. 6B.Light a campfire and tell the bambies some scary stories. Seriously, good work. A definite thumbs up....

Waffenator posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
DayZ's motto is "This is Day Z. This is your story" I interpret this from a development point of view as there is a very high degree of customization and freedom as evidenced by choosing ARMA as the engine. Already, in Alpha we see severs that are highly customized, mods on top of an alpha mod...DayZ, is living up to its Motto. Because of the customization element most people can find a server that caters to their tastes. There are even mods with no zombines, not to my taste, but that should not matter, what should matter is sticking to the motto...crushing the opinionated with the salty retort of..then play on a different server or customize your own to your tastes. For me, existing in a game environment where the haters can be shamed into being considered too incompetent, too lazy, to make progress when the opportunities rest before them is highly liberating....that is, there is even more potential to censure the whiney ass biatches then in games very well know for doing just that, such as EVE. From a gameplay perspective if DayZ is to live up to being "your story" then it should be a robust and very open ended one. We are afforded some incredible opportunities and possibilities in this game. For example, 1. We have the ability to link maps via either public or eventually private hives...each map can eventually develop its own story-line .its own gear..its own "top tier" items. Think of each map as a module or building block in a nonlinear story. 2. The hive either public or private could connect all these maps, perhaps eventually letting gear beyond the backpack come with, or setting prerequisites of moving from one map to another with the same gear....such as having a certain vehicle or being at a certain location on the map, such as a port. Thinking big, the hive could connect many maps representing key areas on the globe...where survivors have the ability to develop just as big as a "story" as they see fit. For example, getting a nuke plant back online, building an extensive base at the Eagle's nest, commandeering an LHD, or as a bounty hunter going after top ranked bandits. The game could even develop a marketplace as even in the worst of times in modern history...e.g., the black death, the final days of WWII in Germany, and the Disco period...people were still able to buy and sell stuff. Overall, I think the possibility of reaching a larger vision in the game is what will attract more players and add another level of immersion. In regards to weapons, under the above framework, then they should be based on what exists in a given geographic region modified based on the likely parties in conflict on the various maps with a touch of balance to make up for countries that have restricted their citizens from being prepared for a zombie apoc. As an aside, Guns and Ammo has their own zombie apoc section and gun makers have been capitalizing on the tacticool gun market...with some manufacturers putting rail systems and telescoping stocks on lever action guns, and selling custom bullets made for zombies. I think its all rather silly, but under the motto of "this is your story", if someone wants to be able to add an acog to a double barrel shotgun who the hell am I to tell them no? Secondly, ammo availability and pack-ability is something I would like to see worked on, that is. Different types of ammo in the same caliber available (FMJ,JHP,Tracer,Frangible, and so on). The ability to carry rounds in boxes or storage within the back allowing it to be a bit more compact then magazines. For example, 100 pistol rounds and 40 or 50 rifle rounds for the same space as 1, 30 round magazine. With a crafting system it could even end up being possible to make the above containers, ammunition, and perhaps the guns as well akin to second life. What I would really like to see is a combination of Iron Front and DayZ where there is an alternate history at the end of WWII...The German super-weapons got out of hand..and there is a zombie apoc starting at The Eagle's nest...with a shite ton of nazi zombies running around.... Am I going to be butthurt if any of these ideas are not realized...no, of course not, because at the end of the day its my responsibility to make the DayZ story my story. What I like about this community so far is there are only a small percentage of the people who complain without accepting responsibility for finding a solution to their complaint...as least compared to many AAA games out there. I hope we all keep that spirit...listen and learn from the veteran community members who rolled out with OFP...and continue to light the 4 corners of the globe with the standard of a different kind...the gamer, builder, crafter, scripter, moddeler...perhaps today's warrior poet. -

All that hate is going to burn you up..... ...Keeps me warm.... The goal is survival and player experiences...there are plenty of games for stat addicts out there. This is not one of those games. I mean, no one after a TEOTWAWKI experience would be keeping track of how many players or zeds they have killed. Most people would be just trying to forget how many! Personally, I empathize with you, however I dont think many people play this game for stats....i could be wrong, but the best times on this game have been survivig with mates and trying to build something that lasts but never does. lol. -

DayZ : Prepper equipment and training simulation?
Waffenator replied to Waffenator's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I would not want to over populate a server with gear. But one man's famine is another man's feast. It would be nice to have some sort of rational allocation...For example, 95% of people turned into zombie's so 95% of stuff is still out there in the world so far minus the time and consumption of resources it took those 95% to all become zeds. In a upper middle class neighborhood in the USA, say South Carolina, in say 20 houses what is likely to be found there? Statistically, it would be at least 14 guns, 10 cans of slimfast, 30 cars, a few boats, something sold by Billy Mays and George Foreman, 76 bibles, 7 "personal massagers", 12 pairs of crocks, 2 hunting waders, 3 atvs, 20 seasons of Simpsons on DVD, an ass load of prescription medication and non prescription, lots of flashlights and knives, 20 BBQ's, at least 2 refrigerators that are reserved only for beer, 10 pairs of binoculars, 3 compasses, a few hatchets, lots of crow bars, 3 original rambo survival knives with built in compass completely rusted and useless, 3 joints, basic handtools, 4 complete collections of Ted Nugent, 90 kilos of beef jerky....and lots of overweight zombies. Go to 20 apartments in New York City and you will not find the guns nor the bibles or ted nugent it those quantities However, you will come across more Enya CD's and half written books and movie scripts. In Sweden it will be somewhere in between and in addition you will find at least 7 cheese slicers per household and tins of fish that may seem rotten but I assure you they are pefectly safe to eat..if you pour the brine from those fish tins over your body zombies will think you are one of them. -

In any TEOTWAWKI event families would be trying to survive together, But in this case we just happen to enjoy the genre. My youngest son is a bit older than that..pisses me off to, he takes up three slots in the Coyote pack. ,-). Where is a tacticool barnebjorn when you need one? -

DayZ stories from the campfire. ...Alone, about dawn...coming out of the forest and into a large clearing by the river rests what looks like a forward mash unit, with several tents and quonset huts. A huey sits on the landing pad. Smoke from a dying campfire rises in the air. 40 meters out hear some grunting from one of the quonset huts. Over the hut is written morgue...Cracking open the door slowly, I see the back of a soldier in full kit from the kevlar helmet to the kevlar boots...Wrapped around him are the legs of what appear to be a nurse based on the white shoes and nylons. Both are grunting and panting in the obvious coitus...yet, my accidental kicking of a can of mountain dew grabs both of their attention and they turn their heads towards me and it is plainly and painfully obvious they are both zeds...muscle memory and reflex has giving my M4 a sight picture of the solider right about the time my mind begs me to shoot them before they spring towards me, as somethings, such as seeing a zeds privates cannot be unseen. This is not a shot for my life but one for my sanity...double tap...the soldier goes down...his head landing in between the crotch of the nurse...two more shots to her shrieking head and its over... So long ago...I cannot tell you if it was real or not...something from a nighmare about Apocalypse Now. a nightmare in this DayZ world, or something else.....

Mythos Shard 1. The Georgia Guidestones http://en.wikipedia....gia_Guidestones Established by an anonymous group in 1980 giving guidance to humankind. The main messages of the stones: Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature. (Mission Accomplished by Genetic Warfare Toxin Relase - The cause of the zombie apoclypse - The unknown genetic compound targets segments of the population that fall far from the guiding principles of the stones via only infecting certain genetic sequences). Guide reproduction wisely — improving fitness and diversity. (Phase 1. Survival of the fittest initiated). Unite humanity with a living new language. (Program not yet initiated) Rule passion — faith — tradition — and all things with tempered reason. (Program not yet initiated) Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.(Program not yet initiated) Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court. (Program not yet initiated) Avoid petty laws and useless officials. (Mission accomplished) Balance personal rights with social duties. (Phase I. Survivor behavior study initiated). Prize truth — beauty — love — seeking harmony with the infinite. (Program not yet initiated) Be not a cancer on the earth — Leave room for nature — Leave room for nature. (Phase 1. Initiated) Mythos Shard 2. Repeated Shortwave Transmission in Several Langauges Message 1. Numbers were detached from humanity once they were captured by the computer. Data led humans to calulcate all manner of reason, yet not allow us to reason with all things calculated. For humankind it was the beggining of an end...where we became masters at doing the wrong things the right way. Our mania consumed our humanity, we ceased to be unique snowflakes, the numbers lowered us to creatures below that of beasts - as we enslaved ourselves to the mania of a handful of us. The slate is now cleansed - recognize now, we are all fellows, with the ability to cast away the old order and build a new one. No 2nd message has yet to be broadcast. Mythos Shard 3. Leaflets found in the aftermath printed in several langauges. Common Sense -The Reality of Human Difference is a fact. -The dividing lines between zombie and survivor are too numerous to detail; the determining factors are based on science and reason. -If you are reading this then you have the ideal genetic traits to rebuild a society based upon reason. -Whether you choose to be a part of humanities collective future is a matter of understanding. We will rebuild a better and brighter future. Signed, Only the following attached symbol appears on the leaflet. Mythos Shard 4 GMO Food and DayZ. Survivors are starting to put 2 and 2 together. Their diet consists primarily of beans, pasta, HFC based cola, and farmed sardines. All of these products are labelled as containing genetically modified food. Survivors have noticed that animals are reluctant to eat any of this food in a similiar way that they will not eat food from a happy meal...because its not really food rather its largely a delivery mechanism for genetic warfare ingredients that target humans with genomes suceptible to various diseases and disorders. In other words, it is highly suspected this food was an early phase weapon desinged to cull the weaker members of society, however, survivors have the genetic resilence needed to resist the genetic weapons contained in the food. The smart survivors are relying on a largely meat based diet but would benefit highly from the availability of vegetables and fresh fruits and nuts. Paleolithic diet FTW.

DayZ : Prepper equipment and training simulation?
Waffenator replied to Waffenator's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Why do you think it would be hard to display the items? Why is ARMA able to use many weapon systems that are owned and copyright protected by companies already? Most companies that are already branding their gear for the apoc. would want their gear in DayZ if they believed it would lead to additional sales. What is the downside? Cheers, Waff
