ArmA III(DayZ stand alone) engine improvements

An improved version of ARma II :OA won't be enough for me either after all these incredible ARMA 3 videos and screenshots. Arma 3 will be a day one buy for me, even pre order if i can. DayZ standalone well not so much now, I'll still follow it quite closely but I kinda gave up on it being my ideal zombie survival simulation I've been waiting for years that I thought it was a few months ago, mostly because it's more of a simple pvp fest rather than survival game but that said, my disillusion has been further enforced to no end when I read that the stand-alone wouldn't be using such a tremendous immersive engine that is the upcoming rv4. To me immersion is everything.

Will the game eventually become a zombie survival game?

I strongly really do hope they succeed with the stand-alone in making the game more of a zombie survival game rather than, like you well described, the 'PvP-fest with a splash of beans and zombies on the side' that it currently is. I personally stopped playingDayZ a few months ago because the survival feeling went just missing and whenever I logged back in the game it just felt like a regular fps deathmatch with a sandboxish twist. I was laughing at zombies, food and drinks were filling my backpack within 10 minutes of game time and I had the choice of various rifles and guns rather quickly, the only thing I was watching was players, and since I'm no bandit I just was left with nothing to do in the game but eventually roam the lands and die from a player bullet, I couldn't even blame the guy since the game emphasize on pvp when really it should just be a part of the game, not the focus/finality.
