Started to change my behavior recently from KOS to 'try to establish contact'. Overall it worked quite well so far. But today was funny :) Was sitting in a treeline somewhere south of zelenogorsk. A random survivor runs into my field of view, just 20 meters from me, sits down and looks around; a pistol in his hands and a lee enfield shouldered. "Hey dude, don't make a wrong move. What are your intentions?" Hmm... his reaction was to equip his lee enfield. One burst from my Kobra in his back and he drops down. Hey that's just a plainly stupid reaction :D If you wanna play bandit, get smarter. Two or three minutes after another player runs towards me, some zombies chasing him. A makarov survivor. I told him that I am friendly but he shall not come close. He keeps running towards me...starts shooting... "bad decision dude"... I just keep my distance to him until the horde does the job for me :) -
You are funny. Instead of running for 30 minutes you are respawning for 120 minutes. :D Very considerate mechanic to save time. Go ahead!

Our group is now using a skill system. We got bored of being random leet soldiers all the time. So our guys can create a character by choosing certain abilities and disadvantages. For example, my character is a farmer: Only shotgun (+1), No map / compass (+1), Purist (+1) Strong (-1), Can use morphin (-1), Skin animals (-1) Another colleague is a sniper, another a medic etc. If you want you can check out our system for some inspiration: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/49539-make-your-own-story-rpg-style/

i'd love this. Sniping in DayZ is a piece of cake compared to reality or ACE. I stopped sniping in dayZ as it is just no challenge. You can even guess distance with an anti-materiel rifle as you can hit him everywhere.

I voted for removal of NVGs. I personally think it is very boring to play with NVGs myself. Either you encounter other's with NVG: Equal playing field, like in daylight. Or you encounter people without NVG: No challenge at all, piece of cake. NVGs are one factor which is driving the people from the server at night.

OP is right, food / water is mere decoration. The only reason I carry 3 of each with me is that I may spawn in the debug plains sometime... There is just an abundance of supplies everywhere. -
You have no points to distribute in the beginning, so you have to choose some disadvantages. In the end, you have to end up with 0 points (or +1, +2 if you like). Skills: (+1) Will stick to civilian clothing (+1) Natural instinct: No compass / no map / no GPS (+1) Purist: Just beans and water (+5) Believer: Drinks only mountain dew. (-1) Hunter: Can skin animals (-1) Mechanic: Only one who can use toolbox-actions, repair cars (-1) Strong: Enables to carry an alice-pack or coyote backpack. Enables to chop wood Necessary for LMG, AS50, M107 or 2 primary weapons. . (-1) Buschmann: Can wear ghillies Medical (+2) Hematophobie: Cannot bandage himself or others. "Women-are-our-future": Does NEVER shoot on women. Stupid: Cant open doors. Messie: Collects useless stuff and throws tin cans on his teammates.

Please see below (2nd reply to this thread) a first draw of a DayZ character system. This is not a suggestion to implement in the game, but a voluntary choice to adept your play to make it more difficult / interesting again. Would love to hear your suggestions on this. /////////////////////// Ghillies, silenced automatics, anti-materials rifles... all the high-end equipment, all in our hands. We've controlled Stary, camped the NWA, drove a vehicle from time to time... raided those tent cities to stock up on supplies, some of them with obviously duped items. We've beaten the game? Hmmm yea for some time, but now I got bored. Would guess some of my teammates experienced the same. But then I got some inspiration :) German players may want to check out "JeremiahRose" (Odium) on Youtube. In his latest LetsPlay he suggest his viewers to invent some kind of story for themselves. Hmm... yea... we tried this and it was big fun :D From a bunch of random l33t soldiers with hightech equipment (like everyone else) we went to: I play a common farmer. Just stick to my good old shotgun. I don't use a map (was born here anyway) and no compass (devil stuff, my grandpa had some bad experiences...). Only one who can skin animals. Like to put a load of pellets in those zombies. Then we have our medic. Not a real one though, 2nd semester medial student, but you take what you get. Only one who can perform blood transfusions. (So noone can perform it on him...) The weapon manic. Insist on a full auto weapon. Only fires it full auto . Can happen that he fires it in inappropriate situations. Our military guy. Skilled sniper. Heavy weapon though, can't carry a second one. Our explosives "expert". (Actually we will have to find out how good he is with those things) "Fatty". Once his eating symbol gets slightly orange he wants to eat. You notice what we are doing? There is some kind of roleplay element of course. The second thing is that we make the game articifially difficult for us. Hey, I loved the game Jagged Alliance 2. When it became to easy, I gave myself more strict rules. (no saves, main character can't die etc.) So now we do this in DayZ as well. This game has gotten to easy for us. But as DayZ is absolutly uncompetitive we can simply make it more difficult ourselves. Why wait for Rocket to create a skill system. We just create it ourselves :) Yea the evening with my guys was great. Suddenly all those small cities became interesting again. Scavening around, looking for new shotgun shells, killing those fucking zombies. It became dark, we continued playing at night (for the first time actually). Found a car, played music over direct. Driving along the coast... finding a second car :) convoy. Woouhh oh already in Electro hurry up. Later on, all of us have just taken place again in our cars after a stop: "Say something or I shoot" - "hey man stay cool, we are friendly" ; started to play some peaceful raggae music. "Wanna jump in?" He decided to trust us and drove with us in the night. A new player, his second day in DayZ.

(0) Weapon maniac: Insist on full auto weapon, preferably an MG. If he doesn’t have one or has not enough ammo to inflict a massacre he forces the team to go to military spawns. Always fires full auto. (0) Pacifist. Refuses to shoot on other survivors unless they show clear signs of hostility (+1) Explosives expert (0): Gets all our explosives. Uses them to blow up the horde. Player can turn to a Zombie, this idea has been raised before. But I have something special in mind, perhaps for the standalone version. Character gets hurt by a Zombie and has a chance to become infected. This last only 60 seconds and then the Player-Zombies dies. My idea is, for these 60 seconds: The vision (and sound) of the infected player changes. Vision blurrs, changes colour: orange, red, white A living player appears as something very visually appealing, white, contracting-expanding Claws on the screen, fleshing biting sound, Heartbeat of 180 beats You want to get closer. The vision makes you running there. The sound makes you aggressive. You attack the living. Visuals and sound give immense gratification for this action. You don't see clearly what you are doing. Without realizing you are killing your colleague which has travelled with you. Make it so good that even a player who experienced this before has to restrain himself immensly not to kill his colleagues. Would make this a fucking piece of art. Perhaps I try to create a picture of what I have in mind here...

I am looking for a f*****g difficult game. Always liked difficult games. E.g. have beaten Jagged Alliance 2 v.1.1.3 on a horrendous difficulty level without loading a save game once. (And it takes about 60 hours to finish this game :) ) I love this thrill of having just "one life". I voted for apocalypse simulator, but actually I am not sure about this. It just has to be "realistic" to a certain degree and very difficult. I am a bandit from whole heart. I am just sad that most of us are bandits themselves, which makes my character decision kind of pointless. I would like to see many advantages for cooperative and pieceful survivors. These groups should be superior to a group of organized bandits. So the only way to survive for a bandit is that he plays really clever. The rest dies trying. -

An advanced crafting system / skill system etc will definitly make it in the game over time. Rocket talked about this recently (at least a skill system). Your main issue is really interesting. The influence of external communication cannot be underestimated. You ve drawn a good picture of how it would look like without external communication. Regular ARMA players use the modification ACRE quite frequently which offers a very refined communication system ( both radio and direct comm). I am not sure, is it really impossible to enforce the use of TS+ACRE? If it is impossible,we can stop discussing this :) -

Like most other groups we have established a stand on the NWA since last week. I think we are doing quite well. I made a log after each evening, so we currently have: 37 confirmed kills (most of em looted) while we suffered 8 own casulties. One of these casulties due to server hopper in the barracks. One due to lag-attack And the remaining 6 casulties due to a team of dupers. We killed 7 of em, all with AS50, Ghillie, Thermal. Might have been a single cheater as well who teleported back to the NWA once he died, as we only saw one at a time always. Yeah, what do you think. Good ratio? Whats yours more or less?
