I think that the way DayZ is right now (and assuming that the Devs continue to avoid arbitrary game rules) then the best way to protect your base is to choose an out of the way location and use camouflage. The only other option that I see as plausible is barricading already existing structures (although barricades should be quite amenable to being destroyed/broken). No place in DayZ should be completely safe.

Don't underestimate the power of aesthetics. When people invest in a character like they do in DayZ (once they've been alive a while), then people will value the way they look.

Or a duffel bag (with epic storage): https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=duffel+bags&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=979&tbm=isch&imgil=IKVnf6U4fRSe9M%253A%253B9BxJWrann5yVfM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.awsm.com%25252F502%25252Fogio-surf-bus-wet-dry-duffel-bag%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=IKVnf6U4fRSe9M%253A%252C9BxJWrann5yVfM%252C_&usg=__APNKWdWxwCNfA-49C1VKAetTxv0%3D&ved=0CFAQyjc&ei=titHVJXzHoL58AWsmIKoDQ#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=IKVnf6U4fRSe9M%253A%3B9BxJWrann5yVfM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.awsm.com%252Fimg%252F2010%252Fvans_joel_tudor_duffle.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.awsm.com%252F502%252Fogio-surf-bus-wet-dry-duffel-bag%252F%3B620%3B384 that can be carried in hands or across back (as Robert Pattinson is modelling for us below): https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=large+duffel+bag+across+back&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=979&tbm=isch&imgil=Fa0SQPle4KEfEM%253A%253BiarQAbPPiadiwM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%25252Ftvshowbiz%25252Farticle-2375769%25252FBeanie-sporting-Robert-Pattinson-flies-LAX-lugging-large-duffel-bag-shoulder.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=Fa0SQPle4KEfEM%253A%252CiarQAbPPiadiwM%252C_&usg=__FJ1EICAIxNdHnxuDnqqgXUbG1C8%3D&ved=0CD4Qyjc&ei=PCxHVI3YINaD8gW-6ID4CA#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=Fa0SQPle4KEfEM%253A%3BiarQAbPPiadiwM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fi.dailymail.co.uk%252Fi%252Fpix%252F2013%252F07%252F24%252Farticle-2375769-1AF75B5D000005DC-476_306x661.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%252Ftvshowbiz%252Farticle-2375769%252FBeanie-sporting-Robert-Pattinson-flies-LAX-lugging-large-duffel-bag-shoulder.html%3B306%3B661

Yeah that's another good one...

Personally I think they should keep the current set up (although it is about to be tweaked by the sounds of it) AND add a weight system (that would affect movement speed and the rate you burn calories amongst other things).
-
Yep totally agree with the OP - layering would be great given the increasing importance of the environmental/survival elements to DayZ. Only issue I could see would be what we already see to a degree of lower layers poking through parts of top layers, although I'm sure that that could be worked around.
-
Personally I feel the benefit of this kind of system (aside from aesthetics) is the ability to tell how long another player has been alive based on beard length.
-
Agree with the OP - the auto assigning is a bit annoying. Also the swapping slots when you paint a firearm.
-
Yeah - agreed - just to highlight it's not about dual-wielding (that's just an obvious possibility that people will jump on for or against) - in my mind it's about immersion and aiding the crafting system.
-
I don't think the Devs realise the importance of this mechanic: bump - because we need beards like Hamilton, New Zealand, needs penicillin.
-
Righto - here is my suggestion to replace the current "Search for Apples" system (which I find a little annoying considering I can see a tree laden with apples and when I search I usually find "not a thing"): - take the 2D apples off the apple trees - have 3D apples spawn on a variety of points on the apple trees (as per other loot spawns) so that if they are visible then you can simply place the cross hairs over them and 'pick them' as per other loot. - you could have a low number of 'good' apples spawn and a whole lot of rotten apples (so that it's not a completely ridiculous orgy of apple eating joy). The reasons for this are: - it adds to immersion (one less artificial feeling mechanic - if I look for apples on an apple tree I can see them pretty quick). - it seems like a fairly plausible approach and may not be too difficult to code (but I'm not a programmer so probably wrong). - the same system could be applied to berries (and later other gathered foods e.g. orange trees, Klashnikov trees). Thoughts, feelings, vague intuitions?

Very nice - like the additions

Like the general idea for sure. Would also add a drying/smoking rack: https://slm-assets2.secondlife.com/assets/5262994/view_large/Fish%20Smoking%20Rack%20II%20MKT.jpg?1331999619 Cooked meat should go off after a couple of days in accelerated time. Salting or drying meet to make jerky would be a good option :)
-
Yeah pretty good idea :)

Hipslot for single handed melee weapons, limitations for two-handed melee storage and slings/straps for rifles
Roshi (DayZ) posted a topic in Suggestions
Having run around for a while with a machete floating over my shoulder when stashed I was thinking that it would be perhaps better for single handed melee weapons to sit at your hip by default. I also reckon that double handed weapons should not just sit on your shoulder but should require a backpack before they can be stashed at your back (NOT in the the backpack but rather between your back and the pack itself). Also, echoing previous suggestions, needing a a sling or strap before stashing a firearm over your shoulder (even if improvised with cord). Still really like the idea of a sling for stashing a rifle in front of your body (e.g. M4 or AKM) - perhaps giving a faster draw animation but at the cost of limiting movement in prone unless the weapon was in hand -
Simple idea really: As we are now getting tents and the possibility of setting up campsites, I reckon it would be awesome to be able to cut shrubs/bushes and carry them to your camp site to provide additional camoflage. Thoughts? Feelings?

I think it should be hard to find mags, and particularly ones in good condition. Gearing up to quickly takes the joy out of the game (considering that at present essentially all character development is based on collecting gear).
-
Yeah if anything - the splint allows you to move (hopefully with a limp animation) but doesn't abolish pain (completely), morphine is a powerful painkiller but doesn't mechanically improve the fracture.
-
PS moderators - could this thread be moved to suggestions now that a suggestions forum exists? (It didn't when first I posted the idea)
-
Thanks! Appreciate the ongoing support for this idea.
