  1. Oh shit yeah - superglue is a great idea!

The only solution for DayZ: Simulation.

After critiquing Ander's medical system ideas I feel that I should put mine on the table for discussion: Part 1: Treating yourself http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/161763-medical-system-for-dayz-part-1-%E2%80%93-self-treatment-of-wounds/ Part 2: Treating others http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/161874-medical-system-for-dayz-part-2-emergency-care-for-other-players/
  3. Yeah true - getting the C-grip and head tilt right is tricky - but generally you have feedback (the farting noise you get when you don't have a good seal or the lack of chest expansion (or breath sounds on auscultation) so it's not inconceiveable that you could learn. I can see a role for a 'medical manual' book in game - say a army medic guide or similar. Either as a reference for the player (which I'd prefer - if you're under time pressure then looking it up is stressful! ) or to enable your character to 'learn' how to put in an IV for example (not my favourite).
  4. Yeah that's true - difficult to see how to implement that except by trial-and-error. AEDs (defibrillators) are actually pretty fool proof as they have been designed for the general public to use. I do think learning effects are important in success.
  5. Some example images - in a rough order that you might use... - When you first access the screen: - Cutting away gas mask for airway access: - Bag-mask (to breathe for the patient): - Removal of vest and shirt (with scissors) for IV line access and starting secondary survey: - Cutting away trousers to access wound: - Cleaning the wound with saline/alcohol: - Suturing the wound: - Bandaging: Not comprehensive but gives you a few ideas. Also these are obviously just rough mock-ups - I'd anticipate a lot more work on the art and the format - remember this is just throwing some ideas around.
  6. "My bad man! Didn't mean to hijack it then, haha" Haha all good - just good to see people on the same page.
  7. The second thread I'll put up focuses on managing other people's injuries - in emergency (time dependent) and non-emergency situations. It's a longer post than this one was so need to edit. Agreed about clothing removal - if the patient is conscious and able then removing clothing would work well. The external bamdage would be for in an emergency to reduce bleeding if you are alone. In an emergency where you are treating an unconscious person who is bleeding profusely, for example, then you cut the clothes off... Have some pics that'll post in part deux

    Two hands

I would suggest that bimanual tasks (I.e. those requiring two hands) couldn't be performed with an inappropriate item in the other hand. In fact opening cans might require you to place the can in one hand and the opening device in the other.

    Two hands

Yeah this is exactly what I had in mind.
  10. Yeah the details aren't the main concern for me at the moment - I just think the whole using the inventory screen to manage wounds thing is worth investigating. As for the morphine thing agreed, although it depends on dose and route of administration a bit. However, it doesn't knock you out (unless higher doses) - it spaces you out. I envisage this being for more minor injuries. I have a bunch of ideas for treating others but it looks like I'll have to cut it down a notch for readability. PS I'm doing my medical training at the moment so I've been in emergency situations and I'm trying to keep it as authentic as possible without going too nuts.
  11. That's why I included pretty pictures...

    Two hands

    Too many pies...
  13. Main point to remember is that wounds are shown in the inventory screen, and can be treated in the inventory screen by dragging items over to the wound, etc. And get some sleep you fool!

    Two hands

Yeah sorry man! Beans are a poor second option but here you go...

Redundant post - now have image in first post...

    Uploading images to the forum

This may be a very stupid question but I can't for the life of me figure out how to upload images to the forum. The help tells me that the is a default uploader and a flash uploader, but doesn't tell me where these are. I have a few ideas for the medical system I'd like to post but this is holding me back. Any help would be greatly appreciated I.e. there's beans in it for you.

Getting a bunch of "You are not allowed to use that image extension in this community" or similar from TinyPic and Imgur... Suggestions?

    Water Bottle Volumes off

Quick note - water bottles are 10ml when full - shouldn't that be 500-1000ml?

    Bandannas as facemask

Like it. Or use as a bandage.

I've only done a few weeks of scrubbing in to surgery, but the bosses have never stopped to consult a manual.

The only solution for DayZ: Simulation.

I hear you but I think if you want to add a complex medical system, it should err on the side of authenticity - if the features are too difficult to do and maintain a degree of realism then maybe best to let em go. But that still leaves a lot of scope for some kind of minor surgery - I liked the bullet removal idea for example (and suturing etc).Ps regarding the liver - yep sure the liver is (one of) the only organs capable of regenerating but only if the patient is stablised enough for it to regenerate. They bleed a ton and as far as I know aren't that easy to fix. So I'd rather for the purposes of the game that a gut shot was generally fatal (immediately or after a delay). But again - good ideas.

    Suggestions for the defibrillator

CPR has a pretty poor success rate but for trauma it's a often a better bet than defibrillation anyway - anything that keeps some blood pumping to the vital organs buys you time to fix holes and restore volume.
  25. DayZ should be about trade offs - there are no limitations or rules against PvP but there may be consequences for engaging someone so it's a calculated risk. Things like limited ammo, risk of death from improperly treated injuries (you can still die eventually from an infected flesh wound even if you kill the guy outright) - hard balance to get right but I think this is the only way forward without losing what makes DayZ unique.
