Inventory space - same capacity but 4x number of squares
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
Rotating items is not my idea but I like it a lot. Inventory management is going to become a much bigger deal as more item variety comes in to play, and having more options for managing your kit is a bonus in my view. -

Tetris - the game of kings... I'm not sure how this takes away inventory space - could you elaborate further? Do you mean because there will be more little free squares with odd shaped items? Also, while I'm not a computer guy, I wonder how much extra computational this would take up in comparison to the other processes the game is performing. Anyone else want to comment on this? Ta -

Hahaha... "I need to let off some steam..." -
Yeah my bad - I forget that script has a technical meaning - not a computer guy. Apologies to your poor eyeballs.

Yeah I thought about that a bit - I think if you had the soothing tones of Morgan Freeman, Sean Bean or the guy who plays Jean Luc Piccard (sorry trekkies - can't remember his name) then it might be a pleasurable experience. But these kinds of sensations should drive you to act to sort out the issue, and become more insistent as the need gets stronger. Not sure yet how to make this side work without becoming irritating in an unhelpful way. -
Medical system for DayZ Part 1 – Self-treatment of wounds:
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Regarding the bandage under clothes - it's a good idea - I think you should perhaps have the option to do either - to stop bleeding while the shit is hitting the fan you just wrap something around the wound to provide compression so you can then sort out the situation. Later, when you are safe, you can remove the initial dressing, take off the clothing layers to get to skin and then clean, irrigate, debride, suture (or superglue) and re-bandage as required, and replace the clothing. If you bandage with a dirty rag, this may increase the chance of a wound infection and you may choose to use prophylactic antibiotics. EDIT: Oh yeah I just realized that the images in Part 2 show wound treatment after clothing removal so there you go :) I like the idea that you may need to replace bandages once or twice while a wound heals, if there is pus or continued wound seepage for example. As for the hit of morphine, yeah sure that knocks you sideways. From what I've read, special forces in the US carry a "pill box" with a COX-2 specific NSAID (anti-inflammatory) and I think acetamenophen/paracetamol - neither have an effect on situational awareness and ability to act, and are additive in analgesic effects with opiates. The military are also working on nasal delivery fentanyl (a synthetic opioid) and ketamine (aka special K - an anaesthetic agent which is analgesic at low dose). They have 'painkillers' in game - I'm assuming that these represent non-opiate analgesia. These could be used when you need to keep your head clear, but be less effective than opioids for pain control. I'd love to see some visual effects of morphine use - e.g. make the screen swim a bit, just as I'd like to see some good visual effects for pain and other extreme states (e.g. hypothermia, hyperthermia, hypoglycaemia). I'll probably write a shorter Part 3 to deal with implementation of pain (which I have been interested in the science behind and have been treating clinically for over a decade as a physical therapist). -
Totally for limiting food/water spawns but think this might be and alpha/balancing issue.

PS is that blue script blowing anyone else's eyes apart? Will change if that's the case...
-
Yeah - I know what you mean, could be fixed by allowing more than one character but that's also contraversial - see the one character, one server thread.
-
Even so - against this sort of thing principle. I prefer the ideas relating to survival time feedback in the 'The name of the game: Survival' thread. That's just my opinion however.

Rewarding players for actually staying alive and surviving.
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
The basic idea is heading in the right direction. Keep any skills 'under the hood' i.e. no overt "You're running skill has increased!" Any improvements in ability should subtle and in accordance with practice. In terms of physical capacity it should also relate to your long term nutritional status. EDIT: Perks are fun in other games, but don't see a place in DayZ personally. -
For me a big no. EDIT: I dislike this sort of stuff because it hijacks your brain's reward system by providing frequent (but meaningless) rewards for playing. The gameplay itself should be enough.

Weight Carried: Impact to run speed and sounds

Rocket has talked about an encumbrance system - sounds like one will be in game. -
Thanks :)

This. I'd add 'plausible' to the mix. Yeah zeds are not 'realistic' - what I'm interested in is "What would it be like if there was a zombie apocalypse?" Not "this is a big scale death match (which is fun but there are other games that focus on that) with zombies". From its inception DayZ has been different to other games. Rocket has made a lot of design calls that people have wailed about because it departed from classic game design, but it has made the game what it is. That's my contribution, but seeing as this thread is just a bit of a demonizing rant I hope it dies about now.

PS I'd appreciate it if you vetted my ideas on the medical system a few posts above... PPS I prefer Google Docs to Google MDs.

I agree with what you wrote - I just think this bit needs a little clarification in the context of saline as volume replacement. Normal saline is a isotonic crystalloid fluid (as opposed to colloid) so there is nothing to hold it in the intravascular compartment (due to lack of large molecules generating oncotic pressure) so it will spread out between the circulation and tissues (i.e. throughout the extracellular space), although during rehydration it won't cause rapid cellular fluid shifts as you say (unless renal function is poor e.g. severe dehydration with acute tubular necrosis). The reason I point this out is that saline doesn't tend to stick in the circulation but can be used for rapid replacement (best for vomiting; dextrosaline tends to be better for other forms of fluid loss e.g. severe diarrhoea), although maintenance should be with fluids such as Plasmalyte) that lead to less tissue oedema. As you say, with severe blood loss suspended RBCs are the best option (if red cell count getting below 70 or so); however, in the context of the situations you'd find in DayZ, blood products would be hard to come by (they need to be refrigerated) so they aren't really an option. Inotropes/vasopressors can come into play to manage severe hypotension (usually in an intensive care environment), but if you have no other option (e.g. no access to properly reconstituted blood products) don't you just 'whack in whatever fluid you can get your hands on' to restore circulating volume and deal with the consequences later? In severe hypotension, giving the heart something to pump against is the first priority as I understand it (whether through vasoconstriction or restoring volume). Anyways, this topic of saline vs blood, and how plausible the current system is, has come up a few times. I appreciate that I'm preaching to the choir a bit (ok a lot) here. It is nice to have input from a qualified and experienced health professional though. You should put in your two cents more often.

Yeah OP you touched a nerve there for me. I remember the feeling of terror you described first with zombies and then with bandits. I remember killing my first player and feeling terrible about it. When you figure the systems out that magic does die down quite a lot. I think that the ruthless PvP is good so long as it makes you shit pure adrenaline, but DayZ definitely needs to develop the other two legs of the tripod - interesting and involved survivalism, and terrifying zombies in large numbers.

I almost feel bad posting his picture but it is all over the web and he is a national hero. And the beard...

If you had a second weapon on a sling in front of you would that limit lying prone unless you have that weapon in your hands? (i.e. if you are using the weapon on your shoulder, you would be lying on your other weapon, which might be a problem).
-
Is this what you mean by a sling?

TL:DR - I'm sorry but 3 lines is stretching my mind...

Like the moly webbing idea for sure. How would that look in the inventory screen to you think? -

Also for vests that are designed as magazine carriers, separate the pockets into separate spaces so that you can't fit a pistol or medkit in there. Vests should have variety that makes you choose one over the other (e.g. knife sheathes, or holsters as well as pockets, etc). Current: Separate pockets:
