When a place a marker on a map does everyone see it?
nahaz replied to RapturJesus's topic in New Player Discussion
The markers are often traps set by bandits. Sometimes (most likely not) they're set by clueless people that don't know everyone can see them. My advice is to listen to Admiral Ackbar when you see them: http://cache.ohinter...b/be/Ackbar.jpg Edited typo :| -
[Guide] How to set up your graphics properly
nahaz replied to nahaz's topic in New Player Discussion
I have explained that settings below high are on CPU, it's not just for shadows. vsync might improve for some people, it's usually a tool to avoid fluctuating FPS by giving it a roof that matches your refresh rate (which is vertical sync time). The GPU settings are not written by engine each start. I have done several tests and they still remain on =1 as I set them, I have received a boost in FPS (doubled it) even when running on my resolution (5760x1200) and most settings on highest. I have often found the BI Wiki outdated on several areas, especially configuration. It's alot better to consult forums according to my expiernce and testing. -
This game is obviously not for you. You should read up some perhaps. The coastal cities are full of bandits. Try and head north, but stay out of Stary Sobor or NW Airfield till you're prepared to fight for your life.

[Guide] How to set up your graphics properly

I updated the post with some changes you can make to config files in your arma profile folder. Please see the main post for instructions. -
The issue with cheating is that Arma 2 is a military sim and because of that is very trusting of clients (read: players) and this makes it easy to cheat. BattlEye isn't a very big project like PunkBuster and thus is slower to react. Both the DayZ team and server admins are working on improving cheat detection and other solutions to handle cheaters, but the problem will always be there, the question is to what extent. Right now it is extreme but it will get better.

Doing coordinated attacks as a group against another group is pure awesomeness. Or even at random people. If it's successful you feel great, if not chaos usually ensues and you have adrenaline pumping like mad. Playing "Cherno Cowboy" as I call it can be fun too, but it's easily turned into simple deathmatching. Though, running around like a mad axemurderer and screaming in voice chat really scares the shit out of people :P

The DayZ team has a stat site in the works. They havn't disclosed much about more than displaying amount of deaths, cause of deaths etc.

Admins - please lock your servers if you don't want anyone playing on them
nahaz replied to battlemetal's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
It sounds like you're running wrong beta version, because it causes exactly that issue. Admins can't kill people. They can only kick/ban or handle the server itself. You were most likely the target of a cheater. -
[Guide] How to set up your graphics properly
nahaz replied to nahaz's topic in New Player Discussion
I did not know that! This is very useful since most people have much more cpu than gpu. Yes it is controlled somewhat in the dayz mission, but in my testing (i'm also a server host) there are always room to adjust the visibility without hindering your vision too much if you can't play with it maxed out. -

Thanks for your comments! I believe I saw some post about that before, what I have not seen is how to properly start arma beta with steam so I might write a post for that. Anything certain you have had issues with or do you only want optimization? -
If you're on a server with crappy performance you will get low FPS. First tips are to turn off antialiasing and set shadow detail to very low or off. I just wrote a thread on setting up your graphics, check it out for more details.

There are 2 skins aside from the civilan one you start as. The one you found is military clothing (camo clothing) There is also a Ghillie Suit, which is a sniper outfit that is designed to hide you in the woods (you look like a bush). (Yes, what you found is legit)

TX6 Acting weird - Little birds spawning, people dying
nahaz posted a topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I was trying to join the server when 2 of my friends were on (CharlesTheWard and Krysset) and a couple of little birds spawned on them (they were in stary), shortly after that several people were killed simultaneously. Str8dumpn, any idea what's going on? I'll see if we can get some screenshots of it. -
DayZ Dedicated Server Hardware Inquiries
nahaz replied to madkowa@gmail.com's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I had a chat with str8dmpn (spelling?) whos the server host of tx6 and he told me he ran the server on 8x3.2ghz and that server is perfectly smooth for me (100+ fps). 4 cores is probably enough and I concur with devserial, get servergrade hardware that is made to be online 24/7 -
Yes I understand that and i'm glad changes are being made, i'm just a bit upset that i got a somewhat, how to put it, "fuck off" from the server admin email. Not that harsh, but it was the result, and I can't see why. I have years of experience in hosting and managing servers, I emailed rdp details to a server on my lab hardware because I wanted to see if it could pull 30-50 players, which I think it can. If not, I can just move the vm to my corporate datacenter, where we have plenty of room on our hardware since we shipped our most critical systems to "cloud"-based solutions, but nothing was done. I love that you're taking time to answer the community here by the way. My point in this sort of ranting is that there's alot of people that want to help but can't due to lack of information. If I had what was needed to set up a server I could do it easily and I'd help others get started aswell via this forum, but I can't because no one is telling me how, it's all a secret and that is annoying. Since you're going with dlls in arma2, will linux be supported? Because I will trash my windows server and fire up a linux one the second it's possible :)

Preventing "ghost" tactics (switching servers exploit)
nahaz replied to gmx21's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I don't think one character per server is an entirely good idea, it could work (say, server hosts got their own database, but that means Rocket has to release it). Another way to solve it is to add a delay on logout/exit, say 10-30 seconds until your character disappears. Then it would be extremely risky for them to do so and you will have plenty of time to either catch them logging out and kill them or move away. -
I like the idea. Since it's all post-apocalyptic just a few lights should work, some should flicker etc, it'll give it more of a abandoned feeling. Yesterday during nighttime it was raining hard and you can't see anything at all with that combo, the human eye is capable of seeing something in the dark, not much, but more than what I saw :)
