I would go through Gews content and track his posting he tends to run lots of ballistic measurements aswell as ranging and damage discussions. Simply click on his profile and hit the find content tab, look through any discussions related to range, damage or other related material he has posted on. Looting = Game Crash?!

Sounds like your character was rolled back after your game crashed. A game crash is not unusual, aswell as your character reverting back to where they were last before the game was starting to have noticeable issues. I do not think a vest caused the crash but rather other issues prior which led up to your freeze at the moment in time you were looting as you have pointed out you had gear prior to this.
