Who Are You? Or "How to make DayZ not all about KOS in a few not so easy steps".
rn_max replied to semipr0's topic in General Discussion
DayZ is a self-confessed sandbox. Welcome to Chernarus. A 225 km2 open world post-soviet state and one of the areas hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world's population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population, now infected with the disease. Go Solo, team up with friends or take on the world as you choose your path in this brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive. This is DayZ. This is your story. I seem to remember that from somewhere What was there to not understand? Nobody sold it as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or some other epic plot. You do what it takes to survive and for as long as possible. The story is how you do that, nothing more. The only score shown in the mod is "Day X" on logging in. Who Are You? OR "How to make DayZ not all about KOS in a few not so easy steps". I seem to remember. Erm ... one line answer? It's a sandbox, grow some imagination. Like I said, sheep without direction ... -

That depends on your diet ... and your psychological well being I guess. You could try getting up from your computer and visiting the toilet occasionally! -

@semipr0 Oh I understand what you posted, but specifically answer why that direction will not matter a jot if the game remains full of guns. They are and will remain the primary focus for many players. I use this with caution ... but you simply don't get it and its not about agreement, but understanding this. A GAME full of GUNS will have endemic amounts of shooting in it, no matter if there is basket weaving, grand designs home construction, or theme park management on the menu. Also, no contrived system like starvation from gunpowder residue ruining your appetite, or having every zed in town chase gunshots, or whatever other silly scheme will change anything. Some people will NOT value their player character, to them it is a means to wield a gun and shoot other players, nothing more. The moment you get that is the moment you begin to understand what drives players who habitually kill on sight in this game. Simple fact is that shooting other players has been THE number one staple of competitive video games for two decades. So if you provide a crap load of firearms, they WILL be used to shoot players. In simpler English, if that is possible ... using melee weapons is NOT the same as sniping elektro from a bush. You WILL be seen, you WILL be in engagement range of the other player, you WILL have to reach their position within two metres or so, to initiate anything. There is risk, there is consequence and there is failure, none of which, your average bambi sniper or lulz killer will particularly want. Some players simply aren't motivated the same way and don't take the game seriously ... at all. I would suggest that too many of the tiny minority that make up these forum dwellers do take it too seriously. Sheesh people, get out of your own head space every now and then ... see things from an outside perspective, or even imagine what the opposition are thinking. You don't have to agree with a view to understand it and disagreement is often mistaken for misunderstanding by people who cannot or will not see past their own point of view. This however, is not my point of view, it is nothing more than how I see it from the outside, so to speak. I don't kill on sight, but neither do I want to see some silly kindergarten rules enforced to manipulate the neutrality of the sandbox to appease the butthurt faction. All this game does is imitate life, in that the majority of people are sheep, who, lacking any direction, cannot think or act for themselves past their next meal ... harsh perhaps, but if not true, there would be no problem in anyone dreaming up an end game past shooting other players. In DayZ guns are that direction by their proliferation and drastic reduction is most likely to shift that focus to something else. -
Somebody has been living in a cave ... that episode of Walking Dead aired weeks ago. And the tank was pretty useless in it.

I said it in more detail across in (yet) another related topic, but here's the TL;DR version: All the time the game is full of guns ... expect to be shot. Say goodbye to most of the guns ... say goodbye to most of the shooting. Simples! Out of interest (or not) here is my long-winded post: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/161100-system-to-punish-kos/page-4#entry1625170 -
Some of us don't usually get to play during our local day time, especially in winter ... something to do with having to earn a living. It would be good to have a choice, or visibility of, servers running day and night.

Well, there is only one way to directly affect the perceived level of killing on sight, which by the way is not a problem in DayZ, as it is a game that has been intentionally set up to have this many guns in it. Completely change the arms race amount of firearms in the game. THAT is why DayZ can be such a deathmatch ... it is overflowing with guns! Killing on sight simply cannot happen unless in possession of a gun. If there are hardly any guns, and I mean rare as hell, then it will simply cease to be an endemic habit. However, all the time there are more guns than can openers, they will be used. Player mentality will never be changed. It is a GAME with GUNS and OTHER PLAYERS. People will shoot everything that moves for nothing more than shits and giggles, because that is how they entertain themselves and have paid good money to be able to do so ... in what has become a time honoured habit in games full of guns over the last twenty years. It never ceases to amuse me how so many people cry on about being shot in a game overflowing with guns, but they would rant and bleat against their removal ... the only effective solution. They are often the ones who try to claim that reducing the amount of guns would not work ... oh yes it bloody would, hardly anyone would get shot with hardly any guns! As for running up to someone and bashing them to death with a table leg, or a pipe wrench, that is not killing on sight. That is deliberate, fraught with risk and up-close personal. No more hiding in a bush on a hill and picking off matchstick sized pixel blobs from several hundred metres in safety. People want a REAL solution to the DayZ deathmatch arms race? Convince Rocket and team to change the nature of the game by removing most of the guns. Want lots of guns in the game? Accept the consequences of them being there.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions ... and KoS topics. For some people, a first person game with firearms and somebody else to shoot will always equal fun and entertainment. No theories, no customisation, no amount of forum space will change that. Pixel killing is nothing more than how some people get their kicks in this video game SANDBOX, there are no rules against it and the game mechanics deliberately allow for it. DayZ is what players, both individually and collectively, make of it when playing. -
Underground locations and base building were discussed by Rocket in some of his videos, Eurogamer last year (?) seems to spring to mind.
-
No deliberate punishment ... no game mechanic nerfing ... just no. Not another KoS topic ... it is nothing more than player behaviour that makes DayZ anything it is perceived to be at any time. Don't like that? Take matters into your own hands, go postal vigilante, change what server you play on, change who you play with ... just all of you stop wasting your sugar coated tears and space for worthwhile topics in the forum. I don't kill on sight and have not been killed on sight in over a year. Get over yourselves and wise up. Stop feeding the insect torturers, you fools, get on with the game.
-
Shhh ... you'll give the game away!

Alienware M17xR3 i7 Q2820 8GB RAM AMD Radeon 6990M 2GB 2x 1TB HD 32 inch / 81cm Samsung LED 1080p TV set as primary display in extended desktop mode, laptop screen as secondary. 40-50 fps generally in the mod. Haven't checked the SA yet, but I would guess 25-40

Au Contraire ... it is ArmA and it wasn't built from scratch, but from the Take On Helicopters engine as a base, sometimes loosely referred to as ArmA 2.5

Game as support / medic / hero... It's quite sad
rn_max replied to TimM1983's topic in General Discussion
OP ... welcome to a video game, where inadequates have an opportunity to exceed their worldly limitations without consequences. And will do so, until parentally dismissed from the computer or otherwise jolted back to reality. -
The developers have already mentioned the possible addition of a "hardcore" mode including first person only viewpoint. Much like the existing ArmA 2 hardcore game settings I would imagine. No matter how much a small and vocal bunch of toy throwers hurl rattles and dummies, third person has been an integral part of the whole ArmA genre since day one and remains in the latest iterations. First person lock has always been a server-side option under the existing mod, using "hardcore" game settings. There are hardcore mod servers and they are ghost towns for the most part. This is a GAME, for the purpose of widespread entertainment, where such choice maintains appeal for a wider audience than the tiny little bubble world of a few noisy forum dwellers. I am for neither side, defending nothing except choice, for the large and mostly silent portion of players who prefer to just get on and play the game with choice on the menu ... those who would rather not have their entertainment warped by neckbeards and fruitcakes with an e-point to grind. DayZ does not appear to have ever been marketed as a hardcore simulator. Where was that in the blurb? I seem to remember "SANDBOX" and "what you make of it" ... The rest is wishful thinking from the anoraks, who in a weird way resemble the ArmA 2 neckbeards who in turn resented DayZ in the first place for sullying their hallowed "realism".

DayZ Standalone: Looking for no PVP server
rn_max replied to Silentine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You might want to try asking in the DayZ Standalone forum, which is that-a-way ... http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/forum/78-general-discussion/ You've posted this in the DayZ Mod forum. -
Are many people still playing the Dayz Mod?
rn_max replied to Suhr's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Simpler than that would be to use an online service like Gametracker http://www.gametracker.com/search/dayzmod/ -
SKS rifle will be a mix of DMR and M14 aim ?
rn_max replied to kataro's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No idea, unless its getting added to the mod. SA discussion is that-a-way ... http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/forum/78-general-discussion/ -
There are no cities north of Chernogorsk. Well there are in the Standalone, but that has its own forum group, this one is for the mod.

How to make your DayZ Steam library page more attractive!
rn_max replied to Anton17's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
All I had to do was take screen shots in game and select the game name in my library list, then Steam automatically used my screen shots as a backdrop. However, I have DayZ Mod backdrops showing ... which might be more likely to be discussed in this DayZ MOD forum. :P -
Developers lied, hackers can teleport players.
rn_max replied to vegetavegeta's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well then, if you learned anything from your piece of paper ... like doing your homework on the Take on Helicopters engine, a derivative of the original ArmA 2 engine used for the mod, you might realise that setpos is a core function used ... let me see ... damn this is so difficult without e-peening a computer qualification ... to SET the POSition of objects within the game world. I wonder just what that might be used to do? Place players at coordinates when they log in? place vehicles and loot at spawn positions? No ... silly me, it was purely included for hackers to teleport with. I guess the other thing that piece of "I might have just wasted four years" paper didn't teach was how to determine the relevant forum. There are no barracks at Balota in the mod, just a closed building with a loot spawn in the rubbish bin shelter. The DayZ SA General Discussion is ... http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/forum/78-general-discussion/ ... that-a-way. -
This we've used to spy on you...
rn_max replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Apart from giving admins a backdoor method of cheating in game, the purpose of this was what? Hacker detection? These "tools" or more precisely server side hacks, played a far bigger role in cheating than prevention. Oh and if you want to discuss this in relation to the SA, that goes in the DayZ forum, this one is the DayZ MOD forum. -
Is that going to be the real Dayz Standalone??
rn_max replied to johnymst's topic in General Discussion
What's this got to do with the DayZ Mod? You do realise which forum this has been posted in? -
Why dayz mod on steam is not updated ?
rn_max replied to Coolyou's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sorry, but for anyone to be able to help you, the information you provided needs to be better than a steam store page and "bump". If it helps, there are plenty of us still playing the DayZ mod through Steam, it works just fine and we can connect to servers. Perhaps the problem is related to your copy of the DayZ mod. I've got to ask ... you do have ArmA 2 Operation Arrowhead or Combined Operations ... right?
