    Melee is now Pointless

When so many people say "hey, we don't have a problem with melee and the hatchet is the ideal weapon", then there must be some ring of truth to what they say. I'm on their bus. I swear by the hatchet and often carry it with just a sidearm for trouble with asshats players. Zeds walking through buildings isn't a broken feature, it is intentional, as is their climbing of ladders and stairs. Killing zeds by hitting them in the head with a hatchet isn't a broken mechanic either, it is a head shot kill, the same as a gun. Taking on the infected population of a town in daylight is pretty stupid. Waiting for lower light levels is far better for stealth. Using thrown cans, bottles, flares and smoke grenades to divert zeds is way smarter. Limiting the number of opponents that can attack you by fighting through a doorway is a centuries old tried and tested tactic, far from unique to DayZ. However ... I will agree that once infected, the whole deal is stupidly dependent on blind luck. I have just run around for four days game time with an infection, surviving mainly by chasing down, cooking and eating half the livestock in Chernarus. Tent rest did nothing, taking painkillers and morphine may or my not have been slowing it down, but I ran out of those before trial and error showed definite results. After scavenging every loot spawn I encountered, literally hundreds of all types, I found no antibiotics whatsoever. Not finding any had nothing at all to do with skill, play style, stealth, or anything else at all ... apart from BLIND LUCK ... or lack of it. Eventually I died ... from a motorbike crash whilst chasing my next meal. It was actually a relief from the tedium of constant eating, looting, getting no meds. I had finally side chatted with a player who didn't have any himself, but his friend did, who was offline. I was on my way to negotiate a trade when I crashed. Otherwise I reckon I would have got bored and stepped on a grenade rather than face endless game time cooking animals and sniffing doorways against a timer. On day one of my next spawn, I finally came across a heli crash with FOUR packs of antibiotics. Again, BLIND LUCK. I had been through several crash sites whilst infected and found only painkillers and morphine then. Infection needs further review and possible change, to a finite, but very large, blood count damage, and/or viable alternative cures. Melee combat, however, appears to be both fit for purpose and widely used.
  2. What? Who really cares? What devblog? Voting "no" came easy, not having read whatever it is, or giving a damn. In similar vein to the years of unfathomable dribbling over Black Mesa, DayZ is just a game, admittedly potentially a great one, but all the same ... Is this the dawning of the age of trivialisation? I blame Farcebook.

Why does crap like this exist?

A bowel movement of text from a lower life form is neither insulting or amusing, like a dog crapping in public. Trolling hasn't changed. This linguistic effluent has been incorrectly identified. Idiocracy is the scariest predictive work of our time.

    The motivation to play

Don't play any more then if you don't enjoy it, that's the whole point. Go do something you do enjoy instead! There are plenty of other games that will make use of your new PC.

    The motivation to play

No offence ... but maybe developing a longer attention span than five minutes would be useful. The curse of current times, instant gratification, certainly isn't on the menu in DayZ, that's for sure.

    Rocket said..

So ... DayZ SA will go alpha when an English toaster/hamster hybrid called Matt reaches sentience and usurps Rocket. Fair enough.

    Your bad DayZ habits

Turbo, as with any control, is whatever key you bind it to. What does what mean? Turbo?
  10. rn_max

    What's your Day Z playstyle?

Hermit with a helpful streak, occasionally making direct contact, but not often. I'll give others directions to decent loot, unwanted vehicles and crash sites. I'll return hoarded vehicles to the general population and have crushed the occasional tent full of dodgy gear.

    Your bad DayZ habits

Cured myself of my most unfortunate bad habit. I check the player list from time to time. I often drive around in vehicles with "turbo" held down. Combining the two proved to be really inconvenient, as that meant a key combo of SHIFT (turbo) and P (player list), which was also ADMIN CONSOLE ... which in turn was also a Battleye #228 restriction and a swift kick to the server browser. Lost a couple of choice rides brimming with loot to that faux pas before I figured out the error of my ways.

    Give me a DMR

You said it. However, its not the composition, but the content that garnered a Lolwut. Think twice post once then.

    Give me a DMR

No Swahili in there that I can see. Whoops, I said 10 minutes instead of 15. However, a 15 minute loot cycle "slaughters" loot farming? It doesn't and hasn't. All that has changed is that It just takes longer to make individual locations produce new loot. To compensate, farmers visit and empty more buildings to fill the 15 minute wait and effectively end up farming on a bigger scale, even jumping through numerous servers in a single location like NWAF barracks to do so. Farming hasn't been slaughtered. It has just been scaled up and requires more game time, but pays off just the same for those with the will and free time to persist. Hmmm ... who torched your arse? An appropriate response? Lolwut perhaps? Or trollololololol? Any other object with a wikipedia entry is just as valid then, genius. We'll settle on Lolwut.

    No Hackers anymore ?

I've not seen any real evidence of hackers since 1.7.7 in public servers, or rather successful hackers. What I have seen is a lot more Battleye kicks and bans for setpos, createvehicle and addweaponcargo restrictions since BE 1.2 came out. There seem to be a lot less dupers about since 1.7.7 and the persistent ones I encountered previously seem to have given up and moved on. I guess finally fixing the menu spamming and disconnect abuse has paid off, though it could have been done several releases ago.
  16. Well done for collating the loot spawn system info. There are a few more relevant points, but they can wait for a coincidental mention by someone else. Perhaps keeping the info not quite complete is suitable penance for spilling the beans to everyone. Not for revealing it, but for spoon feeding everyone, which I don't agree with. I'm a great believer in effort being its own reward and none of this was ever kept secret from anyone ... or difficult to find out ... and it has been published ad infinitum. The loot spawn cycle was announced as fixed at 15 minutes in the 1.7.7 changelog. So either there is more to the cycle than just the player trigger itself, or the timer was reduced in 1.7.7.1 ... or the 1.7.7 changelog was incorrect. Given no further 1.7.7.1 changelog item, either 1.7.7 entry was wrong at 15 minutes, or another look and/or field testing with a watch is required. From the 1.7.7 Changelog: For those who have wondered and asked about despawn or cleanup time for loot, this entry was in the 1.7.7 changelog:

    Give me a DMR

That's a well intentioned suggestion to rectify the n00b tube DMR, which is strangely unfettered, compared to the bizarre and over zealous nerfing of other weapons like the crossbow. The main problem with the DMR, as with other military weapons, is that they are far too common because of loot farming and server hopping. If players couldn't farm the crap out of the system, then the other weapons would more likely have been ultra rare, if limited by, say, absolute numbers in the hive, or perhaps non-portability between servers, like vehicles. Then all the whinge wars would never have happened, every two-bit asshat with too much free time on their hands wouldn't have a spec-ops gun rack tented up in every server ... and those guns which shall remain nameless may not have been candidates for removal. On the public hive, low loot probability simply doesn't work on its own and it is naive to have thought otherwise thus far. It just means that players who are determined enough and have plenty of free time, will farm in a 10 minute loot spawn cycle (instead of the old 5 minutes) for several hours ... covering a wider circle ... and hop through more servers in the same map location, until they do get what they want. On some public servers, NWAF barrack huts are like bloody teleport terminals at peak playing times and the biggest threat is having players raining out of nowhere on your head. As for private hives, the vast majority are way over-equipped, with depressingly complete start up gear, cranked up loot spawning and "care package" crates spewing exotica all over the place. Powerful military weapons need to be restricted by absolute numbers, not just spawn probability, otherwise some players will simply farm and farm until they get what they want.

    Fix the hosptials?

Can you? Never tried that one. If so, well done and add it to the list.
  19. Is there some kind of infectious ignorance spread by forums? Your antibiotics bonanza is the result of random chance, just as when others find none.

    1.7.7 tents

I'm still managing to pitch tents in a few concealed locations, but they take an awful lot of trial and error to place right, especially near trees. Haven't managed to try any stashes yet. Of my two regular characters, the public hive one has an e-tool and no sandbags found, the private hive one has sandbags and no e-tool found. I don't know about stashes, but it may be worth noting that tools take weapon slots in tents. If that is the case with stashes, they won't hold much of a start-up cache with one weapon slot.

Viral Zeds need to be easy to indentify.

As others have already pointed out and illustrated, virals are easily identified by their lack of table manners.

    Fix the hosptials?

I've watched plenty of zombie films over the decades and they are almost universally crap. The cities in them are not death traps. Survivors mostly end up getting killed because the plot is clumsily manipulated to have them make stupid mistakes and/or unrealistic decisions. Basically they die because a stereotype zombie plot, like most horror, has to have people be stupid and die. Both Chernogorsk and Berezino hospitals are on the edge of town, so they're not that risky to reach anyway. All they need is a little more consistency on the loot front, as do the other locations. Loot doesn't have to be much more common, just a bit more relevant and a bit less random ... oh and not have one item of each type appear all over the place in waves. What is it with that lots of one item syndrome? For example, when a whole town has watches, road flares, toilet roll and Makarov mags in almost every building. Then an hour later, nothing but razors, chem lights, pepsi and binoculars. The loot spawn probabilities seem to have been broken in vanilla DayZ in that respect for ages ... which is tied to the antibiotics being such a lottery, but I guess is also another topic. Sneaking into cities in Chernarus, is easy.. Wait until dusk or pre-dawn, when the light is poor and be economical with light sources ... or use ambient light. Those trying during the day, should expect an asshat to use them for target practice if seen, or the magic eye to give them away to the zeds when they step on a hard surface. I still think it is a clumsy and contrived nerf to keep players off roads, that asphalt makes players much more easily detected than gravel or grass. Gravel would be much louder than asphalt ... and the real clumsy part? How the hell does a road make players more visible (yes, watch the eye icon) than the gravel or grass next to it?. Another topic as well I guess.

    Fix the hosptials?

Just a quick update. I finally found my first pack of antibiotics since 1.7.6.1 ... woo-bloody-hoo ... at a crash site. Blind luck that they spawned there, though it was a little tense avoiding the military zeds and several virals to get them. After scavenging far and wide for the last few days, I managed to find four wheels, some scrap and a couple of jerrys to get the UAZ in motion, but don't want to play so long for so little again.

    Non BattlEye Servers

DaiZy? Yes, my bad. Never came across it myself. Glad I didn't I guess, having learned more by building a local private hive server, which can be unmodified vanilla and played alone or with invited guests.
  25. I don't have a problem with the ArmA 2 inventory to be honest. Being a revamped ArmA 2 engine, I would imagine the SA has the same underpinnings, with a re-skin and the drag-and-drop from in-world feature added.
