Yeah, it's all about line of sight. Through whatever means you need to get either an object between you and the zombie or gain sufficient distance that they lose sight of you. Using trees, steep hills, buildings, fences, rocks etc etc to get some distance and then dropping to a prone or crouch position is the best way to do it. If in doubt just head for the woods. Few zombies can stay with you if you just keep running through the woods.

Coincidence that a bot should bump this topic now... I got kicked and banned from a server last night for carrying a hacked weapon. I suppose ignorance isn't really a defence but I honestly didn't know it was hacked in (It was some variation of the M16, of which there is a bewildering array for the non-military nerds). I was happily using it when I saw a message on the server chat warning me to drop it or face a kick/ban. So I dropped it. I was then kicked and banned anyway. Which was disappointing cos I'd just dumped most of my gear in a temporary camp. So there I was, in the middle of Vibor, most of my gear gone and no primary weapon. I had to get a couple of friends to go and grab the stuff from my camp and bring it to me. So, yeah, great idea kicking & banning folk for hacked/duped weapons but it'd be nice to be given more of a heads-up. Seemed a bit harsh.

some servers super laggy like my computer sucks?
Spandex replied to DZ28's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sounds feasible. We find some servers just run like shit sometimes. It is definitely server-side though cos it affects multiple people. All you can do is find another server to play on as some become utterly unplayable. -
DMR, AKM (Gave my buddy my M16 when I found the DMR) and M9. Hate the M9 though so am looking to swap it for a G17 at the earliest opportunity. If someone was to offer me a swap of a M14 for my AKM I'd probably take it too... Rocking my first ever Coyote backpack. All tools (there's one space left though? Radio perhaps?). Found multiple ghillies and camo outfits but I'm still in civvy clothes cos I'm a girl. EDIT: Oh and still searching in vain for NVG's and rangefinders. Found 3 GPS's in that time though...

Fascinating game this. Allows folks to behave like assholes and dress it up as "being a bandit". Of course assholes make the game more interesting for us normal people but they're still assholes. Even if they only realise it after the fact.
-
I was thinking mainly of perhaps entertaining the idea of not executing any stranger you meet the instant you see them. Makes the game more interesting. Of course just trusting them with your life and gear the instant you meet them is not a good idea.
-
As far as I have seen thus far the rules are simple: Rule 1 - Do not get attached to your gear. Rule 2 - DO. NOT. Get attached to your gear. Rule 3 - Trust no one. Rule 3 can be flexible to make things more interesting IMO but rule 1 and 2 are concrete. Remember them always.

After playing for several weeks and not seeing a single hacker and then saying so on these very forums I have been brutalised by hackers twice in the last 3 days. First up they took our car off us, teleported us into a pit of death and executed us. Last night they somehow stripped one guy of all his equipment and then started levitating everyone. Luckily I got wind of it before much had happened and emergency bailed. My 2 buddies died when they logged back in though. What was annoying, and worrying, was that there was only 4 of us on the server when the hacker dropped in and killed (tried to kill) all of us. Before now keeping to low pop servers was a good way to avoid them.

Thanks for the offer Strazy but I am now sorted. Logged in tonight and the infection was gone? Not sure if that is normal or a lucky fluke but I'll take it. -
Sorry I looted your tent... I was desperate!
Spandex replied to Penny Sue's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This. I was cackling away to myself when we found a tent and took an M249, DMR and M4A3 CCO and left, in their stead, a double barrel shotgun, Winchester and AKM. I never leave anything I can't afford to lose in a tent. I work on the assumption that it's not gonna be there when I get back. Invariably I am correct. -
I liked the FAL but ammo is too rare. I'll take anything that takes the STANAG rounds. More accurate than the soviet stuff and ammo is relatively plentiful. Invariably I end up rolling with the AKM though. I just always seem to find loads of them and lots of ammo for it.

Hi, not sure if this is your area of expertise or if you can help me out here but I'm sick... In need of antibiotics... which I have never even seen before nevermind knowing where to get some. I appreciate you guys are more about helping out the stricken, unconscious types but I thought it was worth a try! FWIW: A - Spandex B - Infected C - Mobile but currently in the region of Lopatino D - Female character. Mirror shades. Toting M16A2 and Coyote backpack. EDIT: Now sorted. -
My current character is female so I don't have much in the way of choice. I've had ghillies in the past and chosen not to wear them. Got some camo yesterday and gave it to a mate. I kinda like my current character. I like her cute little hairclips.

I've seen a couple, took one to complete my toolbelt. Never seen any sandbags though.

Concerned about Standalone Interiors
Spandex replied to MrBlick (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Personally I'd like to see shambling zombies that you can outrun when out in the open but can run/shamble indoors. Meet one isolated one in the field and it's no problem. Get several cornering you in a building and you're screwed. That would give the game a nice traditional zombie fiction feel. -
Given unlimited resources I'd like them to continue to work on both. Given finite resources I'd rather they go all out on the Standalone. Put every single man on making it as good as it can be. DayZ the mod is superb. DayZ the game has the potential to be one of the all time greats IMO.

What type of playstyle do you prefer?
Spandex replied to Imafighter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
3 of us play together and we all play a survivor/zombie killing role. We avoid contact generally but will make runs into the larger towns and military spots if needs be. In terms of PvP we vary. I take each situation on it's own merit. I won't kill for the sake of it but if there's a chance that they might attack then I'll kill them. The 2nd guy is pretty much a pacifist. He has yet to fire on another player. The 3rd is very much a bandit. He doesn't kill for fun but he does kill most on the off chance they have some items of gear that he might want. We sort of even each other out. I'm nominally the leader (I don't start barking orders but the decisions as to where we're going and what to do about other players are usually made by me) so can usually reign in the more aggressive PvP'er. -
Not how I wanted my first player contact to go....
Spandex replied to AMF3's topic in New Player Discussion
I'm always in two minds whenever I see someone else. On the one hand I'd much prefer it if most PvP interactions were more friendly. But on the other hand I love the fact that player interactions are so tense and fraught. My current character is about as geared as I've ever been and when I suddenly crossed paths with a ghillie suited dude in the middle of the woods on Green Mountain last night I just about shat myself. Luckily he didn't see me so I watched him wander off through my scope, finger poised, and then headed off in the opposite direction. -
I don't kill other survivors as a rule so I don't really have any stories of me killing anyone. The most amusing murder I saw however was down in the South East. I'd spawned at Krutoy Kap *sigh* and so had started the long hike back to civilisation along the coast. As I rounded the Kap I saw a large truck (Ural?) backed up to the beach and 3 guys all in ghillie suits firing towards Skalisty island. As I stealthily approached I finally saw that there was a dude in the water 3/4 of the way to Skalisty. The 3 guys on the mainland were basically using him as target practice. They'd fire off a few rounds, pop back to their truck, grab another weapon and start firing again. Amusing for them and me, not so much for the poor sap in the water! Alas I was unarmed and so was unable to help the poor soul so I figured while they were intent on the guy in the water I could make a break for their truck. Unfortunately they finally killed the guy as I was about 10 yards away. One guy turned and shot me dead instantly. Can't say I blame them. I may have been unarmed but I had every intention of stealing their truck or at least making them shoot lots of holes in it to stop me.

I played similarly to begin with. It was fun for a while and very immersive. Being very careful, scoping out the smaller towns before sneaking in and looting them. It's tense stuff and a nice change of pace from other games. But, IMO, there's only so long you can potter around in the wilds ekeing out a living by yourself. Rolling with a buddy is much more fun and while hitting the supermarkets and apartment buildings of the larger towns is more risky it brings corresponding rewards. One quick, 10 minute run through Cherno will yield more gear than several hours of scrounging about in the countryside. Also, for the solo, non-PvP survivor you're gonna need a bigger backpack (ALICE packs are relatively common), canteens for water, knife/hatchet/matches for food and a compass. Map is not essential IMO if you're using an online map. A tent is nice to have to for a bit of extra storage though mine rarely seem to retain the stuff I put in them. My weapons of choice would be the Winchester and revolver. Plentiful ammo and powerful enough to despatch zombies.

Be nice. We already have plenty of bandits and kill-on-sight dudes. Some more friendlies would be nice.

How many times have you died to zombies?
Spandex replied to Blippy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
A few times as a noob - Usually being chased into a building with only one entrance by a large mob. Or getting a broken leg. Only once as a more experienced player that I recall. Running through a town a lucky swipe from a zombie broke my leg. My teammates couldn't get to me in time. -
How do you control your DayZ Rage?
Spandex replied to Derpy_Hooves (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Certain games anger me. Others do not. For some reason DayZ falls into the latter category. The only temper tantrum I have had is suffering from our persistant internet connection problems and repeatedly getting booted at the most inopportune moments. In terms of the game itself, I'm still playing with a smile on my face. Even when hackers took the only vehicle I have ever owned off me, mere minutes after I had finally fixed it up, I had a wry chuckle and then laughed as they teleported me into some sort of barbed wire Pit of Death and executed me. Now Battlefield 3.... that's a different matter. Some truly epic, toddler-esque tantrums in that game. Smashing a mouse of keyboard to pieces then going and lying down in a darkened room usually does the trick. -
Sounds like a shit idea to me. You may as well just set it so that you spawn in with all the gear you died with as well.
-
Not sure if it's foolproof but I use the fact that main hive servers seem to show the mission as "DayZ" whereas private ones show as "DayZ Chernarus".
