Ten Reasons why Kill on Sight is 'Realistic'
perestain replied to Rogo Ignoscant's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
lol So according to this the best way to stay out of trouble in a zombie apocalypse is clearly running around shooting at people. One question, are social situations making you nervous? -
Shooting everything you see isn't realistic...

Patience is part of skill. Just as a skilled F1 driver exercises patience in waiting for an opportunity to pass' date=' or a skilled soccer player exercises patience looking for an opening in the goal. [/quote'] Agreed. Patience amongst other things is oftentimes key for success (and for meeting the winning conditions in a competition). Well they are aspects of skill, but they are not measures, since there is no clear way to quantify and compare them individually. That's true. It's not what I do, but it's true. But that's not how I've survived for 18 days and 50+ hours in game. I own ~11 vehicles on two different servers, a network of fully-stocked tents (legitimately found) scattered across the map and well hidden. This takes skill as well - using the terrain and a knowledge of travel behaviors to choose tent locations that are not discovered. I have in my possession one of every gun in the game at his point except for the Camo SVD. I take chances in the game. lots of them. I survive because I play more skillfully than other people. To deny that this game requires skill is just folly. Thats an impressive archievement for sure. For people who strive to not die while accumulating as much gear as fast as possible (which is probably a large part of all players) it can be considered skillful. Still, for someone whose goal it is to run through all cities full servers with a flare at night it might not be that interesting. In the end, it depends on how you personally weigh different aspects of success. There is no formula that would yield a single measure that applies for everyone though. Whatever your goal, you have to be alive to accomplish it. Surviving is the universal goal. If you choose to do that in a boring way, that's okay. It requires less skill than surviving while doing exciting things, but that's your call. Not necessarily. If my goal is to just accumulate as much military gear for some friends in the shortest amount of time I might want to leave everything I have in my vehicles, minimizing my risk of losing anything upon death and just take a chance and run to NWA naked with an axe. A death might put me 15 minutes behind, waiting for reinforcements and executing a carefully planned operation would take way longer though. I'm not saying this is a particularly legit way of roleplaying, but its well within the game rules and mechanics and might even be fun to some. I'm not sure if we talk about the same thing here. A measure of skill is a variable by which skill can be clearly quantified (i.e. "measured"). It think we already agreed that survival time alone is not an appropriate measure of skill. I don't see how such a variable could ever exist, considering there is no winning condition and its a complete sandbox. You'd have to make a measure up, and then it still could always happen that other people don't really care about it, since they think other aspects are more important to them. So you can never really conclude that someone sucks unless you know his exact objectives. In the end, I'd say the most "success" to be had from this game is experiencing exciting situations. Thats where this game really shines IMO. -

You mistake patience for skill. Anyone can live almost forever in a deserted northern part off the map on basic hunting gear and a can of water. No skill/training needed for that beyond knowing the game controls and how the inventory works. Its just dead boring and thus people decide to do riskier things for fun. That doesn't mean they suck, though. If you play a videogame with zombies, you might aswell have some fun, right? There is no real measure of skill in this game, there can never be because there is no winning condition. You decide for yourself what your goal is, and as a result what you consider skillful gameplay. I think its a good thing, because it is one of the very few games that are damn exciting and can still be played with casual-gamer friends no problem. -

Guess what' date=' these threads will continue, if you are able to think logically even for a slightest bit, you would understand why. [/quote'] Oh this is wonderful. First of all just because you are going to bitch about something because you suck at arma two and cant seem to kill someone with your little axe because thats all you find that isnt our problem. Dont come to forums to bitch about it. He has a point though, if you want to go for a realistic experience, the deathmatching is bullshit. As is the circumventing of permadeath with tents and/or vehicles. It all depends on what you like the game to deliver in the end. Besides, there is no way to suck at dayZ, since there is little skill involved. You only need to get used to the controls and be patient enough to avoid risks and you can get everything you want. Its great though, since I finally have something to play with my RL friends who would never put in the practice time needed for competitive gaming. The controls are glitched in a way that real competition would be hardly possible anyway. You'll probably rather see Angry Birds played at WCG before they even think about picking up Dayz or Arma. It's only bullshit because you call it deathmatching. That's fine if you see it that way, but it's not anything like a deathmatch. It's about survival, not score. If I kill you, you won't kill me, thus i've increased my chances of survival. It's very simple logic. Not killing you drastically increases my chances of dying to you. Killing you reduces that chance to %0. Deathmatching in other games is not necessarily about the score either, it can be played for fun, or for warmup. In CS i even unbind the scoreboard in deathmatch, so scores won't distract me from practicing properly. Your logic of killing just to survive doesn't work out completely either, because if you kill me I can respawn, grab an M16 from my tent and/or tell my friends to hunt you down. So killing someone doesn't always lower the chance to get killed, it may aswell increase it. Avoiding any contact is obviously the best way to survive, and it could easily be done by anyone, but its dead boring to most, thats why people prefer to play deathmatch style instead. -
So far I could drive all vehicles with WASDA. If you get in the drivers seat, you need to check the top left part of the screen, it will tell you if you have gas, and what parts may need repair. Parts that are ok are green.

Bullshit. There are no rules other than the game mechanics. Why would anyone care for some pseudo-ethics that griefers make up? If you wanna stop playing a videogame, you do so. Anyone who seriously has a problem with that should get a grip on reality. People aren't griefers just because they don't play the game the way you want them to. Stop being such a fucking carebear. There's a reason that term is thrown around so much on these forums. There are so many carebears it's ridiculous. How you could play a game where you are EXPECTED to die at some point and then complain when it happens in a fashion you didn't want? You guys won't be happy until players can't kill each other at all, and then people will find other ways of doing it(not that they haven't already; hello tin can! Hello horde of zombies investigating tin can!). I don't complain about dying at all. I kill on sight myself. Thats not even the point of the argument. You complain about people stopping to play a videogame when they feel like it. And you complain that people should follow imaginary "rules" or otherwise they break (your?) immersion. If anything, you are a carebear. -

Was the game better or worse with bandit skin?
perestain replied to zalman's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
the game was more interesting with bandit skins, because player interaction was more diverse. upon seeing someone, you had to figure out his intentions (the skin alone was not a sure sign), and that led to intense and interesting interaction. There was cooperation, doubt, and betrayal. And true banditry. This is all gone, nobody has to guess anymore, since it is completely clear how a stranger will react. Trust, doubt, betrayal, coop are gone, its a onedimensional deathmatch now. I wouldn't even call this banditry, since there are no choices to be made. Not shooting first is simply bad play and will lead to getting shot every time. The game is still fun, but it was way more exciting when player intentions were not completely obvious, which was the case before bandit skins were removed. -
This is a deathmatch game where you additionally pickup items and have some zombies for distraction. There is no co-op with strangers, unless both of you just spawned and neither of you has a means of killing each other. The game description implies something different, and infact it was different. The changes that were made are the result of griefers complaining about how it was "unrealistic" that they were being visually labelled as bandits. Removing bandit skins was supposed to make player interactions more realistic, but it archieved exactly the opposite, removing any diversity from it. The game is still lots of fun and collecting loot is addicting, but its not nearly as interesting and promising in terms of player-interaction as it used to be. People simply treat each other as enemies, and do not need to guess anymore what the other players intentions might be and figure out an appropriate way to deal with them.

THIS GAME IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR NOOBS
perestain replied to JERRY220's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
zombies are easy, if you're unarmed, just run away, they will never catch you, you can run across the whole map unharmed. if you want to lose them, just enter any building with 2 entrances, wait until they follow you inside, and leave. If you want a gun, just go into a barn and pickup a shotgun. its not that hard. Morphine is somewhat rare, so its a natural goal to stock up on it. Just go to a hospital and take it, unless you already find several on your way there. Zombies are not op at all, you're just to lazy tolearn to play properly. In real life, if you didn't have a gun against zombies you wouldn't start complaining, but instead start running. Why don't you try that in the game? It works just fine. -
No PK server: * The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen *
perestain replied to Ghandi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
^^ i dont understand that too. but its verry common for online games' date=' especially racers and fps games. this social disability to have fun out of ruining the game for others is really kind of sick. ^^ especially if you go on a server to hunt ppl who have retreated there to play alone. [/quote'] I can explain it to you. Why would you not want to go on a server and kill cheaters? Because thats what people are playing on such a server. They get easy access to high-end items which are usually hard to get since hostile players are constantly fighting for them, as a part of this game. People playing on this server certainly do not "retreat to play alone", they can and of course will use their cheated items in any other server they please. Yes, their items are cheated, because instead of facing and overcoming the risks and obstacles that are involved with getting military equipment at NWA they try to find a way to go there and just grab it without having to worry about anything or fight against anyone. And all servers are connected to the hive, there is no possibility to play alone whatsoever. Once you have silenced equipment, you can camp NWA/Stary all day, bag 123482372 sniper rifles, nvg, assault rifles, etc.. and then spread them in tents across all servers in your hiding spot. While regular players on these servers have to earn that stuff and oftentimes die while trying to. People going on this extraordinary server to hunt and kill the extraordinary cheaters are doing all the other dayz players a favor, really. -
Thats a pretty cool idea actually. To help against people d/c ing to avoid death you'd have to have players who disconnect while bleeding/in shock/unconcious die though, otherwise getting a free teleport out of trouble with all your gear is still viable. Against server hopping and repositioning I'd suggest to raise the logout time to 1 minute.

Rocket is partially causing DC'ers
perestain replied to Zeromentor's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There are obvious solutions to this. Logging out while bleeding/in shock/unconcscious => you die upon your next login. Its easy enough to implement, just one check for these conditions during character creation when logging on. If any condition applies, you get the death screen. Alot of abusive D/C's can get solved with that. There should be also a way to stop people from quickly relogging onto a server again after having switched the server. Not sure if its possible to implement a waiting penalty until you log in again, but it would prevent positional D/C's. Other than that its completely pointless to try and convince people to not disconnect when it gives them an advantage. A lot of people play videogames for fun, and don't care about virtual ethics that are written on some internet forum. You simply won't make people obey a rule that tries to restrict the freedom to stop playing a game whenever you want. And you wont stop people from simply pulling the plug if you remove ALT+F4 key functions. If I wanna stop playing, I turn my PC off and go do other stuff. I won't have that fundamental freedom revoked by anyone or anything. If this gives me an unfair game advantage in certain situation then it is simply a game design problem, but you can never blame me for leaving a game. That said, I dont D/C to avoid death, since it breaks immersion and I quite enjoy the early game. -
Died for no reason... My story :'(
perestain replied to Shuriken333's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sniper or silenced headshot. The blood display froze a few times for me too when I got shot. No idea why and under what circumstaces exactly. I have another died for no reason story though: I had a ghillie suit, mp5 SD and a PDW with lots of ammo, lots of bloodpacks, meds, and steaks. I logged out in a barn on the first floor behind the hay. I log onto another server, the building doesn't load, I float into the air, start falling to the ground and die - although I had 12k blood and would have easily survived a fall from the height where I logged out. And I had enough morphine to cure 3 broken bones... When I return to the barn after about 20 minutes there is no body, I only hear flies. I guess its best to only log out on ground level. -
Hmm.. I'd disagree. Just from the looks I'd say a czech pack should hold more stuff than the alice pack.

should there be regular resets on characters
perestain replied to vanilladragon's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yea I already played through that game. Highly recommended. Seriously though, I use TS a lot for strictly competitive team-based gaming (CS, SC2, sometimed Battlefield which is not that competitive though IMO), but for a simulation like DayZ which is all about the atmosphere it is a bit of an immersion breaker. Yea, it got a bit lengthy, sorry, haha. Still I will not understand why people think its so important to accumulate stuff thats sitting in a tent, only to ever be pulled out to deny permadeath, which is one of the main points of the original game experience. If, after your tent disappears, you realize that it is pointless to accumulate stuff, then I have some news for you: It has been pointless the whole time, even before it disappeared. Surprise. No really, you shouldn't have to be an avid existentialist to notice that. -
Way to deal with people circumventing permadeath and not contributing to gameplay by simply putting mass items in tents all day, at someplace noone would actually ever go to.
-
Stumbling upon glitches is not cheating, much the same as dieing from a random glitch does not mean you're a bad player. If people wouldn't try these things out, they would not be found and couldn't be fixed. Its actually a great thing for the devs to have quality control outsourced and completely for free during the development phase of the product. Banning people that accidentally find glitches and abuse them would simply be counterproductive. It only shows what a promising game rocket has in the making, when people get that emotionally attached to it even before the beta stage.
-
No! You shouldnt be able to simply respawn to get fresh magazines and full health. It is easy enough to either lose zombies in a building or find a hatchet and fight them.

No PK server: * The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen *
perestain replied to Ghandi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nice, a cheat server to gear up without trouble and then use the gear on other servers. oh wait... -
I think it would be a good idea if you had to be conscious and not bleeding, otherwise you would simply die and leave a lootable corpse incase you logged out. This would be pretty straightforward to implement and cover a lot of situations where logouts are immersion-breakers and potentially abusive. In any case the rule has to be hardcoded into the game. I, for once, will quit playing a videogame whenever the f*ck I feel like it, and anyone who thinks he can introduce some pseudo-ethics that would effectively take away this freedom from me is simply heavily deluded and should get a grip on reality.

perestain replied to luxuselg's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'd be completely ok with wire fences if they would work as intended. Instead, they're glitchy as hell and lead to graphic bugs etc. They should be removed until they get fixed imo. -
