    Audibility vs Visibility

I believe that rocket referenced this in the 1.7.1.5 thread... EDIT: Found it... see below Thoughts on this? I can easily do this. HOWEVER. There may be a small performance impact from it. EDIT: Actually' date=' it would keep spamming your position. Would have a major performance impact. I could probably write something on this later. But for now, might not be possible. [/quote']

xD As I said, it was just something I whipped up in ten minutes because I was bored in class.

DAYZ CHRONICLES - User Initiated Fiction Thread

Yo~ Wrote something up quickly... Just tell me what you think, and if it's worth continuing... it only took me about ten minutes. The sun was high in the sky before the man even dared to peek out the shattered window, his weary, bloodshot eyes scanning the horizon fearfully. The house was barely in one piece, the faded wallpaper peeling off the walls, rotted windows vainly attempting to contain their last few fractured pieces of glass. He glanced around once more, then crawled back into the living room, the one room without a window to the outside. There, he opened his small pack, checking over his few meager supplies. A can of beans, two cans of soda. A water bottle, but it was empty. His pockets didn't hold much else, just two mags for the small pistol he had found in the drawer upstairs. Apparently, someone had felt the need for a little personal protection. Whoever had owned it originally, however, was most likely long gone, after the infection that had blanketed the country. His gun however, was still functioning, mostly. The slide had needed a little makeshift repair, but fortunately, it had been easy enough, even with the survivor's scant few resources. He checked the chamber, then the mag, sliding it out and counting the bullets in it for the third time in so many minutes. Still seven. There had been seven for a while now. With a tired sigh, he slid his pack onto his shoulder again, making sure it was tight and that the contents didn't jangle when he shook it. Then, with a final check to his weapon, he crept to the back door, pulling it open slowly so that the rusted hinges wouldn't squeak and give him away. His nervous eyes darted around, checking the surrounding area once, twice, then three times before he dared to step outside, hugging the edge of the house tightly as he slid along. He peered around the corner with one eye, ears straining to hear the sounds of anything besides the breeze blowing through the tall, unkempt grass. He hopped a rickety fence, feet landing quietly in the soft dirt as he darted along, sticking close to the buildings, hugging the solid protection they provided. His pistol was held loosely had his side, pointed at the ground. As his father had told him long ago. "Don't ever point a gun at something you don't mean to shoot." Well, there was a lot to shoot nowadays, but still, better to hide and not shoot at all, than waste the precious few bullets that he had left. He checked his watch, which he kept carefully wound at all times. It wouldn't do to lose track of time now. Nearly ten o'clock now. He reached the last house in the small village, his back pressed up tight against the wall as he peered out one last time. Still nothing. Perhaps he was lucky today. Allowing himself a small smile, he sped out in a low crouch, keeping low to the ground, sticking to the high grass as much as he could as she made a break for the tree line. It wasn't until he was surrounded by the shade and the soft rustle of leaves overhead that he sighed in relief, turning around to see if his flight had disturbed anything of a less than savory nature. Only one small movement could be seen, off in the distance, the slow, shambling gait of one of the infected. He watched it for a few minutes, then shook his head. It hadn't seen him. With another sigh, he turned and headed off into the woods, picking his way deeper into the forest. Perhaps he could reach Vybor in a few hours...

    Pending Hotfix: Build 1.7.1.5

I'm still a little curious about the fact that a hatchet takes up ten inventory slots in my inventory. Was this ever something that was going to be reverted? I was pretty sure I saw rocket post about this in someone's thread complaining about it, but I can't find the thread anymore. Seeing as I already have a hatchet in my character's inventory, I don't want to log in and see it either disappear due to lack of space, or make my inventory glitch out. -Raven
  5. Or, in other words, one of the most flawed arguments out there. Let me try to explain myself here, and why I believe that this argument is completely worthless, and means nothing when spouted off at any person who's trying to make a valid point of their experiences within the mod. I'm sure everyone reading this knows full well what the words 'learn to play' mean. Unfortunately, this statement has become almost parallel with the demands that a player 'go back to WOW', or 'return to COD, you CoD nubz, you'. The problem is that the 'Learn to Play' statement could be a perfectly valid one, if it was in response to a player who has obviously proven that he does not know how to play. More often than not, however, it is simply placed in response to a player stating his opinion about certain changes made in the framework of the mod. The most recent example of this can be found in seemingly any possible thread about the 1.7.1/1.7.1.1 changes, notably those involving increased zombie aggro and the removal of the starter weapon. It has been repeatedly used against players that not only have proven their ability to play, but their skills in doing so. Even when such players are interrupted by bugs, and happen to complain about it in these forums, it seems that the L2P argument will invariably be thrown against them at some point or another...

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

No, it makes complete sense to tell them to 'adapt'. They know how to play, they just don't like playing like that.
  7. Ravenspear

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

Well, then why can't you just say that? You seem to have such an easy time writing it... 'learn to play' means a lot of things, but only in context to the individual. You might have to explain it to the people who are complaining.
  8. Ravenspear

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

I'm just saying that the term 'learn to play' is used in situations that generally don't make any sense xD.
  9. Ravenspear

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

Well, that may be, but none of those things you have stated have anything to do with the playstyle of the player. Perhaps "Learn more about the game" would suffice better than 'Learn to Play"
  10. Ravenspear

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

And sadly, this is where the often understated difference between the term noob and the term newb will arise. A newb is a new player, one who has not yet grown used to the game, and may require a bit of help in his/her endeavors to understand it. A noob, on the opposite hand, is a player who has had more than enough time to grow used to the game, and the way it works, yet steadfastly refuses to understand it.

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

Certainly, it is based on a matter of perspective, but if you asked a Korean if you should learn more about starcraft, he would probably tell you a few things. It's not how well you know the game mechanics. You probably know just as much about starcraft as any Korean out there, they're just quite a bit faster. If you've ever watched a (stereotypical) Korean play the game, he does the same things you would do, but he's a hell of a lot faster than you at it. Simply telling people to learn something isn't much help. Encouragement and advice goes a hell of a lot further than, and I quote here "Learn to play brah".
  12. Ravenspear

    The 'Learn to Play' Argument

The best advice I can give you, then, is to simply play the game... Sadly, posting a question or complaint on these forums seems doomed to failure at most times, so my current modus operandi is to basically just watch for the update posts from rocket, and to ignore most everything else.

DAYZ CHRONICLES - User Initiated Fiction Thread

Well, I really couldn't help but laugh slightly at that. I'm sure that the varied, rich, and creative texts of DayZ writings may exist somewhere out there, but... I fear that the majority of users on this forum may not ever be able to experience them to their full extent, either because of their own personal leanings on the subject, or due to some other... issues.

DAYZ CHRONICLES - User Initiated Fiction Thread

This does seem like an interesting idea. Mind you, I'm not really one for so-called 'fanfiction', but I do enjoy writing a good deal, and a large part of what someone writes is affected by what they read. Stories in the DayZ world seem like they could be quite interesting. -Just a Writer -Raven

    1.7.1.1 is to hard?

So... I hear monkey Zombies are hard... Are they THAT hard? Please note I'm just trying to make you laugh, not trying to be a troll
  17. I'd hate to start with the words "I think myself to be", but in this case, I'm not really praising or insulting myself, but rather trying to get across a point. I hope that I'm generally a well mannered, civilized individual, both on forums and off. Perhaps my manners have been tempered slightly from the large number of other forums that I've been a member of, but I hope I come across as someone interested in holding a more thoughtful discussion. Personally, I can't really take either side in the argument of die-hard DayZ followers vs. the so-called 'casual gamer'. I've played a lot of games in my time, from RPGs to Shooters, Space-sims to Combat Sims. I still don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, mostly because I don't really have the time to game for more than maybe an hour or so every day. I'm probably not that much older than many of the individuals who decide that placing a little thought in their words isn't necessary, and provide us with the standard of what we call flamers, or trolls. Some of the posts I have read on this forum are just downright insulting in the most hurtful ways. If anything, I always try to make a mental image of the person I'm posting to. If I don't agree with that person, and as always, want to try to present that disagreement in a well spoken way, then I try to picture them as some sort of great big yorkshireman with a huge bushy beard, muscles that could put a tree to shame, and waving an axe or something in my face. please read: matchbox spawnrate

I can confirm this. In my last three days of playing (even back in 1.7.0), I found a grand total of 5 ALICE Packs, 3 Binoculars, 7 Watches, more flashlights than I bothered counting, about the same number of knives, two maps, several hatchets, m1911, revolver, m104, AK-47, and two camo suits, but absolutely no matchboxes whatsoever. I raided the entire eastern coast, then worked west from Berezino all the way to Putoshka, but I still haven't found a single box of matches. I haven't even tried 1.7.1.1 yet, due to a lack of free time recently, but from what people are saying, I wouldn't have much luck there, either.

Updates but says im in 1.6

Strange, it lets me through no problem... My only thought is to try making an account on ArmA II.com? Really the only thing I can think of.
  21. I have issues sometimes with turning a flashlight on/off. I'm on a nighttime server, I have it equipped and in my hand, but even though I tap L... then hit it again... then go into an overclocked rage of spamming L as hard as I can... Sometimes it turns on, sometimes it doesn't, I've found.
  22. If you downloaded the 1.7.1 patch, and installed it, then you have 1.7.1. The 1.6 that you are all seeing while browsing the server list is the version of ArmA II that you have, while 1.7.1 is the version of DayZ, which you won't see there. 1.7.1 does, however, require the latest beta patch of ArmA II, which can be found here (It should be 93825 right now) . This will change your ArmA II version to 1.6.93825, which should be what the 1.7.1 servers require. NOTE: The ArmA II beta patch also seems to remove the issue with changing to the ghillie suit or camo suit skins, as well as fixing the direct communications. It will, however, remove your global/side chat, but as this was rocket's intention, you really should have known about this already.
  23. Ravenspear

To all those who think they have 1.6

I believe, if I read one of rocket's posts correctly, that the removal of the global/side chats was implemented in the DayZ Mission file server side. The only reason that most people still could use it was because they didn't have the beta version of ArmA II. Yes, the beta will remove global/side chat, but rocket has stated that he intends to place items in-game that will restore their functionality...sort of. Not in this patch, but maybe around 1.8

Hmm, that's never happened for me before... what if you try searching 'arma II beta' on google? It should be the first link
