If you really can't wait, then go ahead, as ArmA's a great game in itself. If you plan to ONLY play DayZ, I would recommend waiting as it'll be cheap.

You don't quite understand. The game itself is harsh. If you are able to cope with the brutality of the game, you have the right to spend your time within that game in whatever what you please. That is how life works. It just so happens that most people choose PvP. Oh well. There's a thousands of people who don't choose to do this, but those people are harder to find as they are avoiding people.

Hey there, you'll want to go get DayZCommander, and use that to install the latest patches of ArmA II and DayZ (And whatever addon maps you like).

All servers are hosted by individual people, however public hives are restricted to our guidelines and limitations, meaning they run by our rules.

I don't KoS. I, however, do not judge you for doing so. You say Better safe than sorry, I say I like to take risks with people. It's the variety that makes the community so colorful. Please, don't stoop down to the level of people who mindlessly bash literally everybody who KoSes. If you do, you'll only ever be at best as bad as them.

If you're unfamiliar with the controls, I'd recommend playing the main story to ArmA II first. There's a little walkthrough that explains the controls and mechanics, then gives you an area to practice with them. Anyway, congratulations on getting it up and running! That is correct. Make sure that the server is running the same mod and ArmA version as you. You can hide servers with a different mod or ArmA version than you by ticking the "Hide wrong mod version" and "Hide wrong ArmA version" boxes, respectively.

Judging by the tag "AS50", I'm assuming you want to start out with gear. There are many servers that provide you with gear at spawn. Take a look around the Private Hives section.

Oh yes, and of course make sure you have uninstalled the pirated game. I can understand the logic behind what you did, but now that you have your answer, it's only right of you to remove it and either acquire it fairly or don't have it.
