What about his earlier reasons for "liking the Minecraft model"? Is getting his fans in there and having them spread the word no longer important? Is he gonna price it at $90 for the full release to keep the "scum" out?
-
Selling the Alpha for $30 just seems like a "screw those guys I'm going to grab all I can, who cares" money grab. I thought Rocket was better than that. I'd have bought in for as high as $20, but $30 for the Alpha phase? No. What's it going to be for release, $70? Screw that.

Just a simple petition to add the Mosin Nagant 91/30 and it's variants to Day Z. Ammunition : 5 rd clips of 7.62x54r. link to ballistics info : http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm Guns : MN 91/30. A long arm, sometimes with a scope (4x PEM, or 3.5x PU) MN M44 : A carbine variant with a folding bayonet. MN M38 : A carbine variant with no bayonet issued. MN Obrez : A 91/30 with no stock and the barrel sawn off. Looks like a sawn off shotgun with a mosin action magazine well. Reasoning : Mosin Nagants are one of the most produced of any manual action rifles. The ammo is extremely plentiful, and 7.62x54r is still in production today. As an eastern bloc weapon, Chernarusians most likely have large stock piles of both guns and ammunition. If you'd like to sign the petition, just post here and uprate the thread stars. Thanks for your support! :)

Military weapons are saturating a game that is supposed to be about starting with nothing and surviving day to day. With that thought in mind, I feel that the weapon system could be tweaked a bit. I understand that this is Alpha, and we have a LONG ways to go. Here's some things I'd like to see : Change 1 : Change the availability of weapons. There needs to be far more bolt, lever, and semiauto weapons as compared to military burst and automatic weapons. Right now, the military grade weapons are just way to easy to obtain, and I can have a full automatic weapon with 10 minutes of spawning in on a new life. That makes them less desirable than they should be. Change 2 : Make some more civilian weapons. I'm not sure how things are in the former Soviet Union, but here in the States, there are some popular firearms that would fit right into a zombie apocalypse game. 9mm and .45 caliber carbines, .223 semi-autos like the Ruger Ranch Rifle, large varieties of .30 caliber rifles like .30, 30-06, .308, in bolt action and semi auto, and pistol caliber lever actions such as .45 long colt and .357/.44 remington. I'm not a modeler, but there are large numbers of them in our community, and I'd be willing to bet that some of them would be delighted to know that their model is in this project. Change 3 : Change the quality of weapons. I understand that this isn't implemented anywhere in Arma II (might not even be possible) but IRL, not everyone takes good care of their weapons. A percentage of the firearms we find should be dirty or been mishandled somewhere in their past. If you have a "dirty weapon", it should have a chance to misfire/ftf/fte. This should mostly apply to civilian gear, with military weapons being the most reliable and accurate. This returns them to holy grail status. I'm of two minds as to whether or not this "dirty" status should even be repairable with an item kit. Maybe it would make the game that much more gritty (hehe) to get stuck with one of those weapons for a while. The yardstick of success or failure right now in Day Z is our gear. Changes like this will make finding rare loot a game changing, immersive feat, and add to the atmosphere of the game. There is a lot that will have to be done to support these changes, like finding a way to beat "server hopping" behavior to keep rare loot rare, but it would be a step in the right direction.

I don't often bandit, but sometimes I get bored. While I was server surfing (home server was pitchblack and about empty, not much fun to be had), I finally had a stroke of luck and found a day-time server with decent ping. I was looking in Gorka for some fueltank parts for my pickup on my home server, when I heard an engine. Driving through Gorka was an offroad pickup just like mine! I started thinking about where his home base would be, and hoping that he would stay in the area for a while. I went over to the gas station between Gorka and Dubrovka, and planted my bear trap I found in the Novy Lug barn. The first time I planted it, it was right at the gates to the fuel tanks. I didn't like it there, so I picked it up (breaking my own leg in the process, stupid bug), and placed it in between the two tanks. My plan was to have him break his leg while refueling, then steal the truck while he crawled around. I didn't even consider him having a morphine, I was just really pleased about my cleverness. After heading up to Dubrovka and hitting the barns for food, I heard an engine again. Sure enough, it was the pickup heading south towards the gas station! I started crouch running after him, hoping he would stop for gas, and watching as he parked the truck right at the gates and hopped out. As he checked the gas station, I guess he saw me laying on the other side of the ridge, poking my head and gun up. He fired 3 quick shots at me, then ran in between the tanks. I couldn't hear the *snap* but I sure could imagine it. He came crawling out and I guess got a morphine from the truck, because he ran around it while I shot at him (400m shots with winchester, he was just a ant) and then drove off. I felt like a failure, but chalked it up to a learning experience and headed over to Polana to see what I could loot from the grocery store there. Just south of town, I saw the pickup sitting there. I sprinted to it, but alas, it was out of gas. I never saw the other player again, I went looking for a fuel can in the barns, and when I came back from getting a drink, the truck was gone again. Yeah, I'm rarely a bandit, and not a very good one, but it made for a good story to tell my friends in TS, didn't it? :)

Little idea that popped up on IRC, how about a Day Z competition? This is a discussion, so contribute what ideas/tweaks you have! The rough idea is this : 10 Squads/Teams of 3 people go into a locked server, and they have to survive/win. The server is set to expert, and loot respawn is turned off. Once loot spawns in a location, that's it, nothing respawns. EDIT : Forgot to mention, there is no respawn for players either. Death = out of competition. Time played is kind of a contention, so my suggestion is that the competition lasts 7 days, with a 5 hour window each day. When that window closes, the server password is changed so that no one can maneuver/loot during off-time. I know everyone is in a different timezone, so squad building will have to be planned out carefully. If at the end of the 7 days, there is more than one squad left standing, a scoring system will need to be implemented to determine the winner. Prize can be bragging rights or whatever. Discuss!
-
Yeah, the spawning might need to be reworked, but then again, maybe not. It would suck to be one of the teams eliminated early, but it sure would make for some cool news/video/drama. Yeah, people are going to horde, but like mentioned before, maybe a scoring system, with kills being the major way to get points. Player and Zombie kills being the major scoring factor would push people to get out and do something, increasing the chances that they run into another squad. There's a whole lot the Devs can do here to make this awesome, it'd be a good showcase for the mod I think. :)
-
I posted it under suggestions because it's something that will have to be handled at a Developer level I think. For something like this to go off, it would need to be supported by the Devs indirectly at the very least, Things like locked servers, loot respawning turned off, perma-death is perma, are all no-no's at a server admin level. I'm hoping Rocket or someone will see this and run with it, hence placing it in "Suggestions". :)

What method of choosing the time zone should be used? A poll maybe? Maybe GMT -2 for a pretty even split between Euro and NA/SA players? No matter which time zone we use, should the "window" be 5pm server time to 10pm server time? That would give 3 hours of light and 2 hours of dark, for a more intense competition, and allow strategies involving flare baiting and finding nvg's, wouldn't it?

No such thing as a useful sidearm in Day Z anymore. Keep your hatchet sharp and carry on, my good sir.

Just to make things clear - weapons nerf is not a DayZ patch.

Just between you and me, Arma 2 was on the back burner before day z. You can probably count the number of beta updates in 2011 with just your fingers. However, when Day Z exploded (yes, exploded) onto the scene, there was suddenly a Beta patch about every 20 hours for the past month and a half. :) -
Can't you just shoot them in the head?
Kophka replied to Obsolescence's topic in New Player Discussion
I love how the general response to "Infected are human and would die instantly when the heart (since they are human and rely on blood/oxygen) is turned into pulp" is... "no, you should totally game the system and take advantage of them having to shuffle when indoors". Fact of the matter is, these are not undead. They might not feel any pain, but they sure rely on the same internal organs we do. Do I think a .45 shot to the ankle should kill them? Hell no. But a .45 shot to the center of the chest? Absolutely.A pair of 9mm shots to base of the neck? Absolutely. A headshot with, well, anything? Absolutely. Now, is any human body taking 5 .45 rounds or 8 9mm rounds to the upper torso before dying completely stupid? Absolutely. As to the "walking while indoors" thing, Rocket's been trying to get rid of that, but it was way too buggy when tested. Whatcha gonna do when that goes away, pray for enough time to disconnect when you get cornered by 12 infected (that are much much faster than you) in a barn? -
Don't un-nerf the damage changed by Arma II patch
Kophka replied to Obsolescence's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Battle/sniper rifles didn't change. Shotguns, all sidearms, the Enfield, and some of the Eastern Bloc assault rifles got changed. -
Scumbag campers are scumbags. Nobody goes to an airfield to loot food, that's just idiocy.

Hunting with 9mm or .45 is frowned upon, but there have been multiple instances of animals like mountain lions or hogs killed with a single pistol caliber round to a vital spot. The difference between humans and animals is that animals vitals are protected by dense muscle, where as even the most buff and cut human being has their vitals presented for target practice. Any how, if you research "hydrostatic shock", there are multiple instances of a small handgun round damaging/destroying vitals that they didn't touch, because of the shock wave of impact and pass through. So realisim arguers can feel perfectly justified claiming that a single 9mm round to the high thoracic zone would kill even an adrenaline fueled rage psycho, because no matter how tough and pain resistant they are, when their heart stops/brain can't get blood/oxygen, (from either shock or a direct hit) they die. In-game wise, the 9mm taking a few more chest shots than the .45 is an ok mechanic. It's pretty widely accepted that the .45 has more impact/stopping power than a 9mm, so it works out pretty well for everyone. The .45 makes up for it's in-game strength vs 9mm by the 9mm having more rounds per magazine it's a good balance. The sidearms really need to be put back to where they were, there was nothing wrong with them in Day Z. -

I don't know why people are all fired up and clinging to the idea that you should have to shoot Infected in the head to kill them. They're not undead guys. They still have functioning respiratory systems and circulatory systems (being that they are sick humans, NOT undead ;) ). Guess what the best way to kill something with a respiratory and circulatory system is? One (1) well placed bullet to the high thoracic zone! A 9mm to the center of the chest destroys the heart, a bit above that destroys the air passages, and a bit to the left or right on the chest destroys the lungs. I can understand the 9mm taking a couple of shots in game, because these are pissed off rage monsters, who are probably immune to things like shock and pain. The .45 however creates enough shock to instantly shut down a functioning system, whether they feel it or not. .45 should still be a 1 shot any where in the chest or higher. :) -

This is always a problem when a normal game goes persistant-character. Clans want a server for their group to play on exclusively (and who can blame them), but it's just not allowed (and rightfully so). The problem with a persistant world/character is that, by their very nature, they allow stats and gear to move across several servers, so having a private server is extremely abusable. It can be used for leveling up (on games that have that mechanic), stat padding, or loot gathering. I love that so many server owners have stepped up and given us a place to play, and thank them profusely. But if the server owner doesn't want to play by the rules, they shouldn't be able to connect to the hive, so that things stay equal and legit for all players equally. Maybe this won't be a problem when the game goes standalone. There might be huge servers that are company ran, rather than individual/clan owned, so that this all becomes a non-issue. :)

Once your fully geared up, it's Death Match that lets you starve to death. What I do (since I want to keep enjoying the game) is stash all the stuff (with our without a map marker for wanderers), run to the coast with a pistol, and start all over.

I've got a tale for you, of how an entire squad of 4 survivors were killed off by... I don't know what to call it. A glitch? A ghost? A portal to the underworld? Whatever you call it, it was brutal and uncaring. The guy that told me this story has since quit Day Z, and has moved on to games that don't make him scared to visit fairgrounds. The story starts off with a group of new survivors on vent, none of them with much experience in the game. They were wandering through the woods north of Rog Castle when they saw a little green house. Being new, they didn't know that the green houses aren't enterable, so they were hopeful on finding something to prevent starvation. The disappointment was great when they reached the house, when one of them noticed an outhouse with an open door. He called out to his friends and went to investigate. He excitedly reported a can of beans and a revolver with 2 clips just sitting on the seat. Within seconds came the "player was killed" message. In shock, the guy told his friends that as soon as he opened his gear menu to take the beans, the door closed on him, breaking his legs and then killing him. He asked his friend to get his map and enfield off of his body, so that he could catch up with him. A second guy walked around to the out house, and noticed something a bit ominous (though he didn't put 1 and 1 together until well afterwards. There was no body. The body of his friend was just gone and there was now an enfield and a green pouch on the seat of the outhouse. He walked over and started to take the enfield for his friend when "BAM!" the door closes on him, breaking his legs and then killing him. He was really pissed, because he had just scored an alice pack at Rog Castle, and didn't want to lose it. The third guy on the squad walked around and looked at the once-again-open door of the outhouse. Sure enough, sitting on the seat was an Alice pack, but no body. At this time, the first guy to die reported being kicked for "bad name". No matter how many times he tried to join he was being told that his name was rejected. He ended up making another name and was finally able to rejoin the server. The second guy was still stuck at "recieving data". The third guy used his scroll wheel to open and close the outhouse door a couple of times, since it was being glitchy. He opened it back up, and took the Alice pack. Halfway through the change over, the outhouse door swung closed, breaking his legs and knocking him unconsious. The fourth player scrambled over to try to bandage him, and opened the outhouse door. As he bandaged his friend, the door swung closed once more, killing them both. At this time, the second player reported being kicked for a bad name, the same thing that had happened to the first guy. He was able to rejoin by changing his name slightly. The same thing happened to the third and fourth guys as well. To this day, none of the squad can re-use the names that they were using when they were killed by the Outhouse, and no troubleshooting or admin help can fix it. It's like those characters are still in the game somewhere, maybe trapped in the bowels of a wooden shithouse forever and ever. Make of the story what you will, but the guy that I know that was in that squad only tries to play Day Z once a week, because it scared the hell out of him. He'll never approach a green house or an outhouse again, and doesn't even trust porta-potties at the local fairground anymore.

CZ550 in game isn't .308 Nato/Winchester. It's http://www.cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-550-american/ available in many calibers, including the specified 9.3x62mm. Onto the main topic, more or less gun variety wouldn't really change anything. Personally, I'd love to see military-grade weapons be extremely scarce, with civilian weapons filling the gap, but once again, that's just a personal thing. We NEED some tweaks to the current system, like : an ammo system that allows you to loot boxes of ammo, then refill your precious, limited magazines from the boxes. With an ammo box system and rarity of magazines (new weapon spawns always have at least one mag, hope you get it before someone else does!) we'd have a dynamic that makes a bit of sense, instead of magically converting magazines that just aren't adaptable. (sorry I got off-topic, I just really want to see this).

Make sure you're not using silenced ammo in a non-silenced gun. It's a bit bugged if you do that, and is zeroed at 1,000m.

Why is this advertised as a Zombie game?
Kophka replied to SolarClipz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It takes a special kind of person to experience Day Z the way it was meant to be, for longer than a few days at least. You are SUPPOSED to be lost, scared, starving, huddling under a tree in the rain, wondering if you will find a well in time to avoid dying of thirst (IN THE RAIN). The only people that really really enjoy Day Z are : 1) Completely new to the game, and have no idea what is going on, and just take things as they come, or 2) An experienced veteran that can still think like that, and not kill the immersion experience with foreknowledge. For the rest of the player base, it's either a vehicle repair/camping simulator, or a deathmatch mode that JUST so happens to let you starve to death if you don't pay attention very well. While either of those CAN be mildly fun, they are NOTHING compared to the way you are supposed to experience Day Z. I speak from experience, because I already killed the immersion for myself once, and it took starting over from nothing with no aids and selectively ignoring everything I had already learned. Having a great time of it too. :) -
Ok guys, here's what you need to do. First things first, go into your Arma folder in steamapps, and open expansions, and delete Beta. Then delete the "BEye" folder (not the setup, the actual BE in expansions) in BOTH Arma II AND Arma II OA. Step 2 : Now use steam to "verify cache". Let it replace any missing files. Step 3: Now, run Arma II alone. It will go through "first time set up". Then reinstall battleye from the steam menu. Repeat step 3 for OA. Repeat again for Combined Operations. Step 4: Enable Day Z for Arma II OA by going into launcher options in Steam, and pasting -mod=@dayz. That should enable you to play. Good luck guys. :) Remember that the Official Update that we got last night IS the latest stable beta (95280), and you don't need to have the beta folder in Expansions anymore. Not until the new beta (953XX) goes popular for servers at least.

Got really lucky in a Deer Stand near Dubrovka yesterday. M4a3 CCO AND a DMR, with 2 mags each. Makes up for the Grocery store in both Berezino AND Krasnostav having 8 watches each and no maps, compasses, or hunting knives the same day, I guess.
