I'm dreading the day we have a random new person pop into our Teamspeak and identify as someone on the DayZ server we're playing on. I'm not going to trust them but I know some of my clanmates will out of kindheartedness. I will just slink away into a pw'ed channel with anyone who cares to keep their hard-earned kit. :D

I would only go there at night or in numbers. Mostly because of zeds, but other players too. Basically your odds of getting capped by a moron with a Makarov are low, as mentioned, but your odds of getting shot by a patient hunter who waited for you to grab some good loot and is waiting for you to get it away from the zombies for him is pretty high...

Not to mention players will hear it from a good distance too. Another reason pistols are for zeds, rifles are for players. -

The rewards for teamwork in this game are plentiful and extremely powerful. Chicago Ted has a great summary of them. So now imagine yourself spawning on the beach and the group of 3 pk's have access to the revive bag suggested here, or have to shoot you only once to reliably kill you as mentioned above. Nothing is solved. The problem isn't one of teamwork, it's one of trust. This mod needs to be played in a group you already know. Playing solo only works if you're willing to use the wilderness and nighttime to your advantage and abandon all hope of teaming up with randoms. -
Just when I was thinking "WOW that looks so easy, I should get my group of 8-10 guys to just go flashmob on the Cherno hospital and apartments!" you guys get bushed by a single player. :D

Anyone else catch the subtle, meta-level irony that Arma 2 (public) multiplayer was basically dead and this zombie mod brought it back to life... in a horrifying form that barely resembles its past life and consumes all who come near it? :P -

In Arma 2, I have always preferred high-power "battle rifles" over assault rifles for PvP. Well, truthfully, I have always preferred using a light machinegun over any other for PvP in Arma 2 but I haven't been able to find one in DayZ. Thus, I use the M14 currently. Have had the opportunity to switch to a DMR but I'm not a great sniper and just want the "stopping power" the 7.62 NATO provides and can hit individual targets out to 300m with the Aimpoint anyway. For Zeds, I have (literally) never used anything other than a pistol. It's just a grotesque waste of ammo to use anything else. I prefer the 1911 due to the stopping power and low noise, but I can usually land headshots anyways. My advice to a new player would be to hang on to your first AKM at all cost. Get used to the iron sights, on the AK series weapons they offer a fantastic field of view. An AKM Will 2-hit another player in PvP with shots to the center mass, and can reliably hit that center mass out to 300 meters. Relative to other weapons - like the M14 or DMR - mags are easy to come by. I have 7 mags for my rifle now but only by raiding player camps. BTW, Arma 2 has long had a problem with 5.56/5.45-class rifle rounds. They lose A TON of power beyond about 250-300m and will require 4-5 shots to center mass to take down a target at that range. I'd still say an M4 or AK-74 is better than a Winchester due to rate of fire but keep in mind the AKM will give you better stopping power. -
Eating beans feels so dirty. I much prefer meat. OP: don't feel guilty. Anyone with silenced weapons and NVGs should not be letting themselves get capped in the back by a noob with a Winchester.

If your mouse isn't broken, could it be sitting next to a wireless device (even if the mouse is wired)? Only time I've ever seen issues like that in any game was from leaving my cell phone next to my mouse and keyboard.

I die a lot more in Minecraft than in DayZ. Thank God there's no lava in Arma 2. Playing this mod (just like every single other Arma 2 mission yet made) is a lot better with people you know, can trust, and have experience gaming with. Placing game mechanics that give bonuses for teamwork, meant to entice randoms into helping each other, will only magnify the difference between those who use real teamwork and those who pick a random server and have a keyboard macro for "Friendly?" IMHO at least.

A long, logical approach to the "Bandit Problem"

I still don't really get why people's first instinct upon spawning is "proceed immediately to Elektro/Cherno/Balota AF and kit up, then make friends and move out." Even a few of my mates have this mentality despite there being 5-10 of us online at the same time sitting pretty up north in the same server. Your mentality upon respawn ought to be "proceed immediately to a position of safety, then carefully gather supplies away from known PvP hotzones." Don't let yourself be a target, basically. If you do get spawnraped, oh well, what did you lose? 30 seconds? And if you get sniped up north, well, someone at least earned that one, right? -

Did you play Arma and not like it? Or Arma 2? The game has come a long, long, loooooong way forward, especially in MP optimization if it's been a few years since you last played. I'd say give it another chance as this mod can be both very rewarding and very aggravating. -
The idea of crafting an 81mm mortar tube sounds very exciting. The QQ'ing in result of letting a few HE shells fall on Elektro might be too much to bear, however.

Bandits don't get punished, Survivors do...

I still don't see how survivors get "punished" for anything but their own mistakes. Avoid contact, it's not terribly difficult to do at any locations other than Elektro, Cherno, and the airfields. Someone could probably survive in the vicinity of Polana indefinitely without ever meeting another player. Deer stands for guns and ammo, market for food and other basic supplies, the abandoned factory for industrial stuff, and nighttime raids on the Berezino hospital for medical supplies. -
