    Fruits and Farming

I’m sure they’ll add in farming at some point; that’s such an important mechanic for the survivalists. I love the idea of cultivating fruit and vegetables; just have to make sure I have plenty of copper ribbon and razor wire to keep the harvest safe. Rocket did tweet about cooking potatoes the other day which sounded promising.

Have I been up north for too long?

It’s these interactions that keep me playing. The psychology of this mod still fascinates me. It’s the ultimate apocalypse sim because it replicates real life. Put yourself in that survivor’s shoes: you’re hit bad/bleeding/passed out. Suddenly you come round and see someone approaching. Is it the shooter coming to claim their prize? Is it an opportunist coming to pick your bones? Is it a good Samaritan coming to patch you up? Do you give up, or fight to your last breath in the hope that this person has life saving assets you can plunder? I don’t condone is actions, but as with nature, a wounded animal is a dangerous thing to be around. You can't blame him for his aggression.

    DayZ 50 Word Stories

Can you tell a DayZ story in 50 words or less? Just an interesting little exercise in saliency. Here’s an attempt at documenting my first kill: A Moment of Malice. Silhouetted against an overcast sky, the iron sights bring him near. Three rounds shatter the tranquillity; he falls silently. I approach slowly, heart pounding. Lying in the wet grass, his eyes pose a question his lips will never ask: “Why?” The answer - like his name - is forever lost.

    7970 + i5 3570k = still low fps..

If you're willing to compromise a little, drop the res down to 720p, disable some of the fancier settings (HDR, AA, V-Sync) and you'll double your FPS. I went from 20fps to 60fps (average). Visuals don't really suffer and the increased framerate more than makes up for it.

    Your Dayz Hometown?

+1 for Berezino I've staked a claim on a small bungalow in Pavlovo. Detached; 2 bedroom; garden front and rear; off road parking; 1 loot shed. Very quite cul-de-sac - the only footfall is the new spawns from Kamenka heading for the the NW Airfield. Just a 10 minute walk to the market in Zelenogorsk.

Maps or countries you would like to play in

+1 for New Z-Land; (it's diverse enough for Middle Earth!) If I had the time/knowledge/inclination, I would love to recreate an in-game version of my real-life place of refuge, The Isle of Man. Like Iceland, this would have a clear geographical advantage in an actual pandemic. It’s also a beautiful place to explore.

Slowed down zombies mode. (Possible for SA?)

+1 for this idea. I would ideally like to see indigenous at varying levels of decay: Newly infected would be extremely fast and agile, but can be killed if hit with enough rounds. Once the infection has established itself, the host will then move at a slower pace that will require more accurate placement of shots to the centre mass Once the infection has killed the host, they become the traditional walking dead; slow moving but deadly up close. Precision headshots would be the only takedown. It would force survivors into taking a more tactical approach when surrounded by NPCs of varying degrees of infection.
  8. Hi, I’ve just rented a Private Hive server for a month. I’m trialling a 24hr full-moon environment - night time is my favourite - and wondered if anyone could give me some pointers with regard to lighting. Specifically, I don’t want streetlights at this point, but I was playing around with the Arma II editor and found that searchlights can make some landmarks look pretty epic in the moonlight. Does anyone have any experience of these searchlights in DayZ? Is it even possible?
  9. I recently had an encounter with another survivor. He seemed genuine and we got on well, but I just couldn’t bring myself to give him the spare Makarov I was carrying in my pack. It would be interesting if there was a way to deactivate the ammunition you are carrying. Handing someone what they believe to be a loaded weapon is the ultimate test to establish their true motives without putting you danger. It would also make people think twice before putting a round in a Good Samaritan’s back. It may add a few interesting dynamics.

    Hand cuffs

I guess it would cause too much griefing. That was Rockstar's rationale for omitting the lasso from the online element of Red Dead Redemption.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.6 Update

There must be a way for those guys to get the recognition they deserve but also placate what seems to be some quite vehement detractors.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.6 Update

Sorry, yes, that makes more sense - I'm not sure how this stuff works. As long as we can get past all this and move on.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.6 Update

A good compromise could be keeping the names but removing the packaging. Having unbranded cans means you get a nice little surprise everytime you crack one open.

    Blogging DayZ

Hello guys, I’m new to DayZ, but I'm loving every second so far. The metagame aspect of this mod has prompted me to start chronicling my experiences: http://alldownthedayz.blogspot.com/ However, I’m beginning to realise that my expectations far outweigh my abilities in terms of long term survival. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a UK based RP server, to help maximise the chances of continuing my blogging narrative with the same character. I also want to meet up with other survivors who will feature in the journal. I've only been around a couple of days, but I’ve already got a lot of stories jotted down. I have a background story arc that I will be incorporating into future posts, but I find the real magic comes from the spontaneous events that occur in Chernarus. My plan is to visit as many points of interest as possible. Level with me; what are my odds? EDIT: thanks for reaching out guys. For further clarity, I want to be able to post the pics from an old Polaroid my char is carrying with him (attached) - so for consistency I can't be respawning all over the map.

Day Six for your consideration. (If anyone has noticed inconsistencies, please let me know – I’m now in uncharted territory)

    Blogging DayZ

@Silentreaper127 @Gernia Thanks for your kind comments and for bringing me back from the dead; glad you're enjoying my little story so far. I've resurrected the blog and uploaded Day Five (part two) I'll endeavor to keep it updated more regularly from now on.

    Endgame: Extraction

As a purist, I am still enjoying testing my survival skills in Chernarus. But for the completionists among us, perhaps some kind of endgame is warranted. Here is a (succinct) suggestion; Players craft a foxhole radio using components sourced around the map. They then travel throughout Chernarus, scanning the airwaves for short-wave Morse/Q code broadcasts. These broadcasts advise specific coordinates (or allude to topographical landmarks) giving time/date stamps which change regularly and must be decrypted. Once every 24hrs an NPC heli will arrive at the pre-notified extraction point and land for 5 minutes. Any players able to reach the exfil point, fight through the inevitable horde and board the heli will be rescued. Obviously the above will be extremely difficult to achieve, but this could potentially open up a whole new metagame. It would give rise to professional rescue squads shepherding survivors, vehicle drivers shuttling players to liberation, and bandits spreading false hope and disinformation with rumours and ambushes.

    Endgame: Extraction

Thanks for the feedback guys; I guess I was just trying to figure out an ending that could be implemented with minimal effort and which wouldn’t change the overall dynamic of DayZ. Like Minecraft, it could be introduced over time – the kind of thing long-term players might stumble into, suddenly realising they have all the requirements necessary to take the next step, if they so choose.

    Endgame: Extraction

The chopper leaves the map and you respawn on the beach, satisfied that your character made it out alive. It would be a lot more rewarding (and less soul destroying) than dying facedown in the mud. "Extractions" could become another statistic alongside Deaths, Bandits, etc...
  20. In celebration of The Festival of The Dead, and the latest update landing, I have a mountain of kindling and a plan to illuminate Cherno tonight. How many campfires can I have lit at once?

[Happy Halloween] light up the dark

@RickyChavez Awesome vid my friend - I was freaking out just watching. Looked like a full on Blair Witch encounter. Did you get to the bottom of the strange fog / bright lights / weird noises? I'm starting to think the whole "light up Cherno" endeavour will take a bit of planning.

    Blogging DayZ

Many thanks for your encouragement, guys – sometimes I need a kick up the backside to get motivated. Seeing as you asked, I will get all my scraps of paper and screenshots together tonight and have the next episode up over the weekend.

    Blogging DayZ

Heads up guys, So, due to a combination of real life commitments limiting playtime, blind luck, and residing on a relatively quiet server, I’ve managed to stay alive and am still sticking to my plan. I’m quite deep into Chernarus at this point, but I have managed to post some more entries on the blog from the early days – typing stuff up is hard work. Entries 3, 4 and 5 are now live – episode 6 will be up shortly, in which I finally make it to Chernogorsk and all hell breaks loose.
  24. I feel that the salute, whilst effective at communicating someone’s (true?) intentions, is a bit bland. I would like the option to map some different gestures to the salute key. For instance, I usually travel without a weapon in my hands. It’s saved my skin on a number of occasions, as most people won’t risk opening fire - and possibly aggro’ing local zeds - if they don’t see me as a threat. A more appropriate submissive gesture (hands out, palms up) would be universally recognisable as a sign that you are not hostile, as it would be easier to establish that you’re not armed.

An Alternative Gesture to the Salute?

Apologies; I hadn't come across that before - I did search. Just found this thread.. http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/35582-spread-the-word-surrender-key/
