I prefer the G17, but end up with the 1911 most of the time due to plentiful ammo. I still have yet to find a supressed M9... one day...

Addressing "DayZ Game Mechanics thread".
codave replied to gambles's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Of course people can judge another player, but telling someone their play style is "wrong" or "ruining the game" is a much different thing. My post wasn't even directed at you, but more the people who go way out of their way to try and prove their opinion is fact. -
Addressing "DayZ Game Mechanics thread".
codave replied to gambles's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
All the self appointed hall monitors can take their silly sashes and go pound sand. We are all equally unimportant. I don't get to dictate how you play your game anymore than you do mine. The real dick move is the assumption of superiority, moral or otherwise. Just get over yourselves and accept the fact that not everyone thinks or plays like you do. Apart from hacking and cheating, whatever you want to do is probably the "right" way to play the game. Can I have my hall pass back now? -
This. Sounds fun though.

Hero skins have bullet proof vests?!
codave replied to JimmyMeatsock's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I have a hero skin, not sure why. If anything it gets me shot at more than the regular skin did. Maybe it's higher visibility, or heroes are higher value targets. No one has ever shot me with a Makarov though, so it seems like the benefit is mostly null. -
If you could change one thing about DayZ, what would it be?
codave replied to colekern's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Definitely more than one thing... More melee weapons. At present there are the two - Axe and Crowbar, and only one is useful. Wind effects added to shots over 300m. Radios implemented, with adjustable frequencies, and a "Radio Channel" added. In addition, there are some small tweaks I would make. DMR should be able to be zeroed, for instance. The AS50 should be the same volume as an M107. The ability to drink directly from a water source such as a pond. Pistols shouldn't take 5 backpack slots when items similar in size only take up one. The ability to start a fire with road flares (make them less common as well). I also love the idea of running into small groups of zombies in the wilderness. -
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've come to the conclusion that some people have never done anything difficult before in their lives, and never will.

Beginning to feel like a solo experience... Advice?
codave replied to SpellDog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you find yourself getting bored, find ways to make the game harder. It would require imposing rules on yourself and following them, but it can be fun. My next life will be one without a backpack or scoped weapons. ;) -
You ever get killed in the most remote place possible and wonder if it was just bad luck or a hacker?
codave replied to DarthVolga's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well, I figured it out by the second time it happened, but at that point I had nothing to lose and wanted a better spawn point before I logged off. :D -

codave replied to DarthVolga's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's happened to me a fair share of times. Just earlier today I was shot and killed in a remote area of the map. I noticed other players dying in very fast succession as well. When I respawned I made it about 20 steps before I was shot again. Rinse, repeat. I was killed within a minute of spawning about 8 times, so I figured it was a hacker and moved to another server for the time being. There have been other questionable deaths, but I don't know for sure. So I chalk it up to "shit happens". -
Maybe I'm the exception, but I've met almost as many friendlies as I have hostiles.

Demystification of the DayZ loot spawn system [SPOILER]
codave replied to insitv's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This explains quite a bit. I often hit up Balota when I spawn on the southern coast. I enter the hanger and there are no sees, no loot. I hit the tower, there is nothing there. I started hitting the hangers again after the tower if I felt it was safe, and regularly found loot where there was none before. And also when I went back to the tower. I read on the forums a few days ago that it's a good idea to pick up the can piles so new loot can spawn in those spots, this kinda validates that I think. Question: If I pick up some cans, and drop them again, are they still considered spawned loot? Does it have to be dropped outside the building, etc. -
The Crossbow Crusader Challenge.
codave replied to Malmortius's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've had a lot of fun with the crossbow before. I always dumped it for a better weapon though. Maybe I'll give it a shot on my next life... so, soon. -
I'm looking foward to a better inventory system. One thing the game is sorely lacking is an "Auto-Run" button. Most of us have probably figured out a workaround by now, but it should be standard with as much walking as this game requires. More realism is always good. The fact that I can't start a campfire with a road flare bothers me. Lastly, more melee weapons would make me a happy player. The crowbar just sucks, and the hatchet gets old after a while. Bats, wood planks, machetes, and the ability to just straight up fucking punch something in the face with a fist or two would be awesome.

Combining/Splitting Ammo exploitable for unlimited ammo.
codave replied to sixty_40's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
On a similar note, I noticed earlier today that if you log off with less than a full mag in your gun, and you log back in it will be full. I looted an AK from Balota Airfield, and used the mag to kill the zombies at the 4x Deer Stands/Medical tents down the road, and had 3 rounds left (only had one mag). I got a text from my buddy, so I logged off and jumped to the server he was playing on - had 30 rounds again. -
Highly Organized Military Realism Clan Recruiting Day Z Players

Except that it's already been done. Ok, bear with me for a second. When you make a wind call in real life, the wind you feel on your face isn't the wind downrange. Especially at distance. There can be multiple wind currents, some going the opposite direction. Terrain and buildings make it even worse. Doping the wind is mostly visual. You look at how the trees, and the grass moves. Flags, smoke, or anything else that wind will move. You learn after a while what a 5mph wind looks like, or a 12, or a 20. Direction of the wind also plays a part. If the wind is blowing at a 45 degree angle at 20 mph, the effect on the bullet is really only 10mph. Another way you can measure the wind is by simply looking through the glass on the rifle, or on a spotting scope. If you pull the focus back a bit, you'll be able to see the mirage in a lot of cases. You'll get a visual representation of what the wind is doing. Again, you learn what mirage means in terms of wind speed, whether it's boiling or flat, etc. Lastly, there are aenemometers that you can mechanically measure the wind with, but I've never liked using them as the only method. Like I said, the wind downrange may be different, and you won't be accounting for it if you only measure the wind at your FFP. Long story short, doping wind is an acquired skill, it takes time and practice to learn... but it doesn't have to be that hard if it was implemented in the game. An aenemometer like a Kestrel could be implemented in the military loot tables, and used to account for the wind in the game. For the sake of simplicity, the wind speed and direction can be constant throughout the map until it changes, no need for realism in terms of cross currents, etc. Wind doesn't have much effect up until 300m or so, anyway. It's negligible. It's pretty easy to call at 500m. Where the wind will really seperate the men from the boys, are the 1200m AS50 shots that SHOULD be hard to make. I'll admit that I would like to see this out of selfishness, but only because I like a challenge. Yeah, OP is doinitrong for sure. -
You know whats fun? Getting in and out of the city with loot while under sniper fire. I imagine it upsets them. I know it would upset me. :D
-
I have a text document I've been updating whenever I find a blocked location like that. I note what building/city/server it's on, and I log out in that location on another server, and log in behind the wire. There's usually some good stuff in there, since no one has looted it. Also, if you're in Elektro or Cherno, and you hear flies, and stumble around the corner and see a dead player with a nice rifle, don't even bother looting. It's just bait. The guy on the hill will wait until you're standing still to loot, then take his shot... it's much easier than hitting a running target. I only made that mistake about 4x before I learned mah lesson.

How do people feel about tents? (not about the bugs)
codave replied to sostronk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is a ridiculously absurd statement. The only reason we even have Juggernauts in the game is because of hacks and other abuses. -
How do people feel about tents? (not about the bugs)
codave replied to sostronk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Personally, the only reason I kept playing after the first few hours is because of how harsh the game is. This game pisses me off to no end, but I keep playing. It's challenging, more challenging than any other game I've ever played. I'm with this guy for making it more harsh. This is the only reason I have no intention of setting up a tent, obtaining a vehicle, or finding some other way to make starting a new life easier. If nothing is really riding on your life, how much fun can the fight really be, even if you win? Up the stakes. Start us with 0 inventory. Remove waypoints on maps, make characters saved on each specific server (not the hive). It's too easy to jump on a 0/40 population server, raid a few loot locations in safety, log out, and into another server with the gear you took virtually no risk getting. I don't like the cross-server saves - at all. You can throw it in the dumpster with the tents for all I care. -
Remove the Murder/Bandit Kill count
codave replied to Jackftw's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Truth. Not truth. As a guy who has been 100% PK in another online game for over 2 years, I can tell you that the only incentive for griefing there is, are the players who think that the game they're playing should be like Hello Kitty Island Adventure. The crying, complaining, and the rage over being killed is the reward, not some tally in the GUI or on the butt stock of a rifle. What can I say, some of us are sick fucks, we think it's funny when people whine and cry... The only thing that will have an appreciable effect on the "griefing" (we have different definitions I think), are the dupe/hack fixes that will show up eventually. The only reason this will have an effect is because it will take more time to get items to kill you with, thusly dividing their time. I would like to see the debug menu gone simply because it's an eyesore. I like having a minimal GUI - I'm not going to miss it when it vanishes. -
It's one of those arguments that seems to have originated either in a movie, or the news. But for some reason instead of thinking about it for a second and realizing it's ridiculous, people seem to repeat it as gospel. The thing to remember, is that for a bullet to be effective, it actually has to transfer it's energy into the target. This is why a graze will do very little damage, regardless of the round used. The larger the mass the projectile impacts, the more energy it delivers into the target. Fingers, hands, feet, arms, and other small sections of the body have less mass than the body, so a hit there is less effective (not to mention a lack of vital organs or CNS). But, yes. The energy a bullet carries is dependent on it's weight and velocity. Even though a .50 BMG round travels at roughly the same speeds, it's also MUCH heavier. A typical 5.56 round weighs in at about 55 to 75 grains, and typical 7.62x51 rounds are generally 160 to 190 grains. Most .50 BMG rounds are between 600 and 800 grains - so they deliver much more energy. But if the target doesn't absorb it, that massive amount of energy is just wasted. All rounds lose energy as they travel, due to the velocity diminishing. Just because I measure a .308 load at 2670 FPS with a chrono at 7 meters, doesn't mean that it will be traveling anywhere near that fast, or hit as hard, when it hits the deer/steel plate/pig 600m away. A .50 BMG round is no different, it's not magic. It plays by the same rules the rest of the universe does.

First post, and all that... yeah, I registered (finally) just to respond to this thread topic. Sniping does not need nerfed. The problem is well known, which is hacking and duping. Once those issues are taken care of, rare weapons will become rare again, and you'll start to see some target discrimination being used. Two things that appeared in this thread that I DO support, are realistic hit boxes, and the implementation of wind. Whether or not wind is even able to be implemented, I don't know. But I would love to see some of you try and make wind calls, especially after seeing some of the nonsense posted in this thread. It would make those 800m to 1000m shots actually impressive, especially to hit a mover. As it stands, sniping in this game *is* easy - compared to real life. It doesn't mean it needs a nerf, it just means that this is still a game. To take a rifle out, zero it for 100m, and use a hold over or dial in the elevation correction (if needed) to hit a target at 200m is fairly easy. Even 300m is relatively easy. Take it out past 400m, and things start getting tricky. At 800m with a .308, a first round hit is a feat of skill, that takes a long time to earn. There are other relevant skills that one needs other than just the DOPE for the rifle/ammo, and you have to put the trigger time in to earn it. Sniping in this game does take skill, just not what it takes out in the real world. Personally, I can accept that.
