Why don't people put tents on top of map?
codave replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't even go up there to look for tents anymore. Much easier to just hit the small ponds/lakes/dams. I find all the same stuff in tents underwater that I would at NWAF or Stary, so why run up there to gear, when I can just get geared on the southern part of the map before I head that way? That probably won't last forever though. But then again if you're smart enough to put a tent or five there in the first place... -
So does this make me an asshole?
codave replied to electroban's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I like the Lego analogy. Spot on. I'm pretty geared now, but when this life eventually ends I'm not intending to "gear" up. I might pick up a crossbow and a 1911, limit myself to a 6 slot vest pouch, and go from there. Would definitely be more challenging to be a bandit that way than a bandit with a DMR, AKM, M9 SD and all the other good gear like I'm doing now. I figure with an infinite number of ways to play the game, I should be able to find more challenge somewhere. -
I've been playing this game ~a month, so still new, but not too green. My buddy from another game I play turned me on to the idea, and after about 15 minutes of him telling me about it, I was already downloading ArmA 2 CO on Steam. In the other game we're on a PK team so I had every intention of all out Banditry in DayZ. I have not been disappointed. Now, I decided I wasn't going to put too much time or effort into hunting other players right off the bat, as I needed to learn the game first. After many deaths, first from the Zombies, and then later other players, I felt like I had a good handle on the game. I was familiar with the map, the weapons and gear, and many of the mechanics and bugs. Time to go hunting. So I respawned, found a basic weapon, and headed straight to Zelenogorsk. Found a player there, shot him and exchanged my Enfield for an AK, and the other needed odds and ends such as a map, ALICE pack, matches, etc. Good to go. I decided it was time to find a sniper rifle. This was my real draw to the game, I gotta admit. IRL I'm a gun nut and precision shooter, so accurate rifles and shooting at distant targets is something I already love, and know a thing or two about. I spent a few play sessions looking, trying tents, military spawns, as well as other players, and coming up short. One day at Balota, I used my traded up M16/M203 to acquire a DMR and about 10 mags. Fuck. Yes. I had already been scouting firing hides since day one, so I headed straight for the one I had been wanting to try the most. I found a nearly full server, and logged in hoping for no hackers. I'd already ranged everything in front of me, figured out my holdovers, and the prep work paid off. In the first 15 minutes I had 6 customers, all of which I gave my absolute best. I moved locations after that, and stayed on overwatch for another 20 minutes or so, and decided no more players were coming. Time to claim my loot. A couple of the assholes had combat logged, so I didn't get much, but I got some things I needed like a toolbox, some more food/drink, and the Glock I'm still using to this day. All in all a good result to my preparation. Over the last week or so I've been making the rounds on 20 to 40 player servers, picking up kills and upgrading my gear. I'm sticking with the DMR though, I've grown attached to the thing. Earlier I found some NVG's to compliment my rifle, and I'm looking forward to putting them to use. Just a couple more pieces of gear to find until I'm satisfied with my loadout, and if I'm lucky the Survivors will provide. A rangefinder and Coyote pack would be nice, even though I'm partial to the ALICE. At this point I've found myself being more selective with my targets. Not much to gain from a guy with a patrol pack and a hatchet, so I'm waiting for some bigger fish. I've had some close calls with this life, point blank firefights that have left me unconscious and bleeding. Other snipers missing me by inches. Bleeding without a bandage. It's been a blast. So, to all you other Bandits out there, happy hunting, and have some beans. :beans: :beans: :beans: Best game ever.

A sniper isn't just for killing whomever they see wander by. Much of the time their role is for surveillance and intelligence gathering, and as overwatch for other people. Say for instance you and several friends wanted to go raid a place. One of you has a sniper rifle, so you post up in a spot that overlooks the target area. As the other members hoof it down to loot, you see a guy trying to shoot them through the doors from the opposite corner of the building. Is it not honorable to fulfil your role as overwatch and protect your friends? Unless you think sniping isn't fair to the people on the ground with medium range weapons... then I agree. It isn't fair. There is a reason that a good sniper team can lock down an area for 1km in every direction, because they can be one of the most effective assets in the field. That doesn't mean it cannot be honorable. It's all about target discrimination, in my opinion.

<~ Hero skin. Every time I log in all my stats are at 0. Days lived, humanity, zombies killed, the whole 9 yards. Or, the whole 0 yards now, I guess. I tried getting rid of the skin by murdering 16 people in the span of 4 hours. No dice. Definitely bugged.

Tried to quit, made it 3 days, now i'm back.

Reverse QQ thread? I keed, I keed. Doubt I could quit at this point either... -
That's kinda interesting about the glitch, I didn't know that. I don't give a shit how to do it, but it answers the question I had about finding players being statues. My first life where I had really good gear went about like that. I had nothing. A patrol pack, a few cans of food/drink, a revolver, and a crossbow. Found a guy dead near a barn with a full loadout. The only thing missing was a GPS and rangefinder, neither of which I really needed. At least it was a legit loadout, I don't figure too many people would hack in a winchester.

I figured that's about what No PvP servers would be like. I've seen them listed, never joined. I'm one of those guys that tries to follow whatever rules exist wherever I'm at (I blame/thank the Marine Corps. for this behavior), so I know I would be following the rules and get popped for it on one of those servers. Not my can of beans, I must say. Now, I did join a private hive server the other day. I didn't want to scrap my current life as I'm sort of attached to it, and want to take the run as long as possible... but I wanted a "fresh start". Turns out everyone on the server is friendly, and I had a lot of fun. My plan is to continue playing on both public servers, as well as the private server, with both characters. All out Banditry on public servers, or me being me on the private server. Now I get to choose how I want to play for the day. It's win/win for me.

My most successful run is the one I'm in the middle of at the moment. Or near the end of, can't be sure yet. I think I'm going on two weeks, but it's hard to tell. I have the Hero skin, so all my shit resets to 0 every time I log in. I've been rocking the DMR and M16A2, with a Glock for a sidearm. Slowly hitting crash sites, deer stands, and Airfields if it seems clear. I picked up half my gear in spawn points, the other half from victi... players. The DMR has gotten me some good stuff over the last week.

That actually sounds like an awesome first play session. Mine wasn't so fun. I was killed by Zombies a half dozen times trying to find loot in Kamenka, Komarovo, etc. A hatchet (that I couldn't figure out how to use) was the best I got until I decided to log out and go read the forum/wiki for a bit. You have a buddy to play with - so you'll have much more fun, even if you epic fail over and over again.

I didn't see it as whining, but if there's an issue with desync, or incorrect data somewhere it would be nice to know about. Ya know? Personally I've always been a proponent of "If you have to pull the trigger, it's worth pulling it more than once." This was covered in the documentary "Zombieland", also.
-
Yeah, you probably shouldn't have cracked off the Enfield. :D I go slow and steady at crash sites. I figure if there's a sniper there, I'm probably hit anyway when I stop to loot. Seems to work so far. Just be patient, and let the zombies wander far enough away to get in and out without bothering you.

lol, awesome. Good locking, and thank you for taking the time to mock him while you did it. :D

tents spawn in same 'spot' each time?
codave replied to Dayzo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I find more tents than I care to. Everyone will happen upon one eventually. Spawn chance seems fine, since it's not a "must have" item like food or empty tin cans. :) -
Yeah, I avoid that guy. BTDT, didn't like it either.

Immersion Breaker (very underrated too)
codave replied to son54's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Actually, you didn't This is what you said. Yes, there is some magical difference between developers and players, I completely forgot. Show me one game developer who wasn't a game player first, or does not continue to play games. Since Fallout has been brought up already a few times in this thread, I'll go ahead and invoke it again. The entire Fallout series does a fantastic job of disproving your ridiculous statement. From the first, to the last, fans and players have made the games better. As the most recent example, New Vegas is packed full of new features that were ripped straight from mods made by players. The Fallout 3 mods were so popular, they implemented them in New Vegas. Primary Needs, and Weapon Mods are the two best examples. Obviously, not all suggestions are good. To a logical person, that wouldn't mean that all suggestions are bad. Why not judge an idea based on it's own merits, rather than the ideas of some retards that came before it? I personally like the OP's suggestion, even if it is present in other games, or has been suggested before. The idea has merit. -

Gotta love it when someone is bested... by their own ineptitude. :) -
Thank you to whoever did this.
codave replied to Geoffrey (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Or we can wait until he actually makes a thread like that. It's probably better than just assuming he will. But hey, what do I know. I'm not you, right? -
I can personally say I don't exploit bugs or game mechanics, but it's for purely selfish reasons. I don't feel like I'll enjoy the game as much, so it's all in my own self interest. As far as duped items... I have no way of knowing if the M9 SD I just pulled off this guy is duped or not. Same goes for NVG's, Rangefinders, etc. If I don't know for a fact that it's duped, and there's no way to tell, I'll take the loot I earned and play with it. It's it's a weapon or item that isn't in the game, that's a different story. I don't think it's a novel way to play, though. I always just considered it "playing the game". How is it a novel, or special way to play???

Awesome story. I can't wait to see the video. I would have never thought of that. BEANS. That's a good idea, actually. I spend a lot of time in this game scouting a good hide, making every effort to find the best possible concealment, even if it severely limits my FOV. It's pretty tough to find unconventional spots, but it pays off... and I've had one too many people teleport on top of me, exactly as you described. My new mission is to find some satchel charges and add them to my loadout. :)

There was an incident last night that I feel a bit guilty about. It happened on one of the US Dallas servers, 2139 or something like that. At some point I realized that there was only myself, and one other person on the server still playing. As part of my normal loot route, I pass through Balota Airfield several times a play session. Half the time it's empty, half the time I end up in a firefight, sniped, or otherwise engaged. Due to the nature of the loot in the area, and the many players that it brings, I'm usually on my toes. Anyway, as I'm checking the hangars I turn around to see the only other player on the server proned out near the entrance, pointing a DMR in my direction. I rushed and started putting 3 round bursts into him, and what I hear over direct chat is "Dude, I'm friendly..." At the time it didn't bother me. I assumed since he said nothing until I started shooting, had snuck up on me, and was pointing a weapon in my direction, that the player was hostile. However, something about the tone of the voice over direct seemed sincere in retrospect. By the time I had eaten dinner and gone to bed I felt bad about it. So, player Gambit, I'm sorry if you truly were friendly. There was no way for me to tell since you didn't initiate conversation before I initiated contact. I don't feel guilty about the 6 other people I murdered for gear that day, but for some reason I do with this one. Strange.

Favorite survival method and why?
codave replied to DANNY (ZOMBES THE HERO)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I lone wolf it. I'll loot some towns for the very basics, some food and drink, an ALICE pack, and some sort of weapon. Preferably an Enfield. If I find a map, compass, or water bottle I'm happy. After that I hunt players for the rest of my gear. -

I'm not saying I wish I hadn't shot him. I'm enjoying his DMR very much, actually.
