Game Design Analysis: Why Cross-Server persistency must die

Why we need MANY more zombies... and in the wilderness too
feriluce replied to LondonHyena's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've yet to see anyone want pvp gone. All that is asked for is that killing someone have consequences, discouraging people from doing it, while still allowing banditry to be a completely viable way to play the game. -
The bandits themself are definately not gone. I got shot for my beans at the balota airfield by a triggerhappy newspawn.

So I may be slightly biased because I've been nursing an idea of a zombie mmo very similar to this for months now, but I feel that there is something missing at the moment. An in depth crafting system. Now I dont know if this is even remotely possible in the arma engine, but it would greatly enhance the game. A crafting system would allow you to craft everything from simple tools to (with the right machinery and skills) guns and ammunition. It would also be possible to build permament fortifications. by crafting various barricades etc. Mostly, however, it would give a reason for people to stick together rather than just deathmatch it out. If bob can craft fortifications and john can craft various tools, they would both benefit from sticking together instead of just shooting eachother on sight. What are your thoughts on a system like this in a zombie survival game like this?

Ah the joy. Takes 20 minutes to even get on to one of these stupid servers, just to find out its night, even though its in a daytime region, or that you have 2 fps. Rinse and repeat.

How I see DayZ and its community right now

THE Night is TOO DAMN DARK Thread. Others will be deleted etc.
feriluce replied to Slamz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The level of darkness may very well be realistic, but that doesn't change the fact that you simply cannot play during night without some sort of flashlight or NVG. Without those you can either rave around in the darkness untill you run into a zombie you couldnt see, or light up a flare and ask everyone in a 3 mile radius to please end your life immediately. -
A long, logical approach to the "Bandit Problem"
feriluce replied to JudgeX's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Realism is all well and good, but in the end this is a game and people are going to treat it like a game no matter what you do. That is why I like the philosophy of introducing unrealistic game mechanics in order to incentivize realistic behaviour. Sure, you lose some of the raw realism aspects, but in return you have players acting more like they would in a similar real world scenario, which I feel is way more important. That is why incentivizing being a survivor or disincentivizing being a bandit in order to limit the amount of deathmatching, is fine imo. -
Why do you people have a problem with bandits?
feriluce replied to Maedis's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The simple answer is because there is no system in place to limit bandit activity. IRL most people would not go around killing other people for fun even after the zombie apocalypse. However, since this is a game and killing other players have no consequence, everyone does it freely. This means that you cannot trust anyone you meet, and and shooting them in the head is always the better option. This makes the game into a large deathmatch with the occasional zombie thrown in there and basically breaks the core idea of the game. -
You, you and you. You are all part of the problem.

Because adding depth to a' date=' currently, rather shallow game is such a horrible idea right? Yea I doubt my ideas could be implemented in the arma engine tbh. However I still think the concept is sound for a zombie survival mmo. The main thing that Day Z is lacking is some sort of goal to work towards. Once you've got a decent set of gear the only goal you have is finding some more food and water. With a robust crafting system in place you could start working towards settling down in a more permanent base Certain areas such as possibly hospitals, power stations, factories etc, would be sought after locations, and you would have a more goal oriented type of pvp instead of just shooting random people for their beans. Groups of roaming bandits would also have targets to raid. But yea, this is way outside of the scope of a mod at this point though. Maybe I'll one day get to realize my idea for the perfect zombie mmo :D

So I literally just ran 6updater to get the latest version, and it seemed to download ok. However, when I tried to join a server the screen started flashing black and it told me I had 1.5.8.1 instead of 1.5.8.2. Any way to get 6updater to download the correct version?

I dont think anyone is somehow suggesting a tradtional rpg level system. You would however need to level up your crafting skills, choosing to specialize in certain things. Thats one of the core parts of the idea. If everyone could make everything at every time, the community building aspect of it would be lost.

Amount of bandits on each server now
feriluce replied to mowsytron's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The problem is that this game is turning into one big deathmatch with zombies as a random annoyance. I don't get why humanity was removed either. At least it gave you a rough idea about the person you have seen. Now you're better off just shoot every other player on sight just to keep yourself safe. I find it hard to believe that that is the sort of gameplay that was intended.
