Ghilies In The Box And A Criticism Of The Current State Of DayZ

Recommended Posts

I saw another thread that provoked me to write this post, i kinda went overboard with it so I started a new topic.

There is constant gunfire, landmines and dead bambi's around Factory Solnichniy. They climb the roof ladder on the 3 story building. Directly north of the train station, lock the door to the roof, and shoot anyone they see through the hole in the floor. After hanging around this building for the past 2 days I've seen too many exploits. people kept showing up with duped ghillie suits,  ghosting into  rooms with and without placing landmines. roof campers combat logging when they have to fight someone with a gun.

It's sickening to me how this many people cheat the game. And 90% of them have no shame in it. You'll tell them its unfair/exploitative  and they'll call you a faggot, shoot you in the face and proceed to stroke their ego's over how much loot they have/ how good they are at killing unarmed people. In one day I met some 4 or 5 people who admitted to duping. they were all locked in buildings. These two ghillies with wrapped svd's and M4's hanging around the coast claimed to be legit. Cause? You know? "reasons".

Yesterday I occupied the ladder room, chilling out with some other freshies armed with nothing but spears. Well it turns out some other guys wanted the spot for themselves because two ghillies came in and started shooting at us from below the ladder. We talked to the invaders and because we only had spears we told them to leave. (if you climb the ladder we'll impale ya) Long story short they kept shooting through the hole and it took about an hour before they finally took the room. (It took the two fully geared ghillies an hour to kill a bambi with a spear)

I run back a few times. "Hey guy's! Guess who's back". Get killed every time.

Finally, I run back and hide within proximity of these degenerates and proceed to have a conversation with them while a group of friendlies start to surround the building. I start telling them the error of their ways. Like how they wasted all of their ammo on bambis and now have nothing to fight with.

I think I did my part in distracting them because they started getting very dismissive of me. They started going quiet, but armed only with words as my weapon, I kept talking. They'd abruptly break the silence to call me a plethora of names when I agitated them enough, but despite the gunshots it was getting quieter and quieter by the second.

By this point they've been held down for about an hour. I've heard guns going off almost constantly on all sides of this building, especially the inside. After about 10 minutes of silence from up top the roof and no shots fired. I came to the conclusion that they must have logged out. After about 20 minutes and having someone go in and check it out. The room is empty. "No sign of ghillies left in that building". The friendlies took the tower and that was the end of it. I did see someone wearing the same "get up" as the ghillies, might've been one of them. Either way he died trying to get up the ladder.

This just left me pretty peeved because I know they're now on a different server doing the same thing to different people. Kill bambi's, Trash talk, Hide from people with guns, Switch servers. Rinse and repeat. This is a prime example of the community ruining it's own game. I really thought the days of COD shit talking were over. but I still come across 10 year old kids in this game who follow me around and talk trash/annoy the hell out of me. (they grow up so fast)

Don't get me wrong, I've met quite a few friendlies and people seem to be getting friendlier. had a lot of laughs and "kodak moments" But the bad eggs really like to make their mark.

There is a big divide in the community between who wants what. whoever has the loudest/most reasonable ideas will end up shaping the game. I personally don't want everyone to have a gun. As it stands I can play for 5 minutes and with a little luck I can have a shotgun and ammo for it. (Is Chernarus located in Texas? I know there was militia's before the outbreak but come on.)

It's pretty apparent that anyone asking for more guns or weapon spawns have only one play style in mind: loot, kill, die, loot, kill, die. In my opinion Dayz should be more about the looting and dying. Dying from the elements, animals, disease, THE ZOMBIES. But no, the most common threat you'll run into is invisible 10 year old kids on the coast wielding SVDS and telling you they screwed your mother last night. (yes invisibility is still an issue)

I'm mainly trying to say that the game is too easy. (duping or not) it already has and will continue to attract the fortnite/pubg crowd and though that's good for BI it could change the game even more than it already has. (Why do we spawn with food and a knife? because casual players whined they were starving too fast.)  Now everyone has a knife and is either stabbing each other or committing suicide to get certain spawns. (p.s. this is very immersion-breaking and it's kind of the reason for the state of the coast atm)

Catering to the casual gamer should be in no way an option here. DayZ should not a game you play casually. Without the grind of finding your stuff and the fear of losing it, Wheres the challenge? Wheres the fun? Do people just buy games for the instant gratification nowadays? Run into something too challenging then just buy something to pass it? Or in this case, exploit the game to win? If the game continues on its current path (disabled rain and night time, spawn with weapons and food, no broken limbs, zombies are barely a threat.) There will be no fun in playing solo and the only real challenge you'll have to face is toxic people.

I just don't understand how taking things away (difficulty included) makes the game better. Might as well remove 90% of the map so its just the coast, remove the zombies, give people guns from spawn, remove bleeding, remove hunger/thirst, implement micro transactions, "50 ghillie suits for $6.99" And make the game into a free roam call of duty where you just have to run to the warzone. (sadly. people would probably buy it and they'd like it)

People seem to want immediate gratification instead of solving the challenge or even playing the game. They want all the gold with none of the work. When you show them the glitter and tell them its gold they'll buy it all day long. And if they truly believe it's gold, they'll even buy micro transactions to beat the game. Pour money into it to save time. Now the player unlocks everything and feels that sense of accomplishment for a while. but they soon get bored and go seeking their next "high".

This is a shady but profitable business move and its been implemented in games like call of duty but with more of a "drip feeding" approach. Give a little, release the next game, give a little more.

When you make the game too easy anyone can play it. But they'll get bored much quicker. when you starve to death a couple times looking for a town or spend a week building a fort, etc. When you finally complete your given task you will feel a great sense of accomplishment. Challenge and reward keeps people playing your game. When they put it down they'll have fond memories and will hopefully want to play it again. (that's why I'm here) Take a look at how many people still play Classic COD (It's not many because they're all mostly the same game, revamped over and over.)

My inner monologue usually consists of "oh i need a spear", *kills chicken* "where's my knife", "this takes a long time", "Shut up bush", "where does the rope come from?", "this is massive, people are going to think i'm hostile", "oh well I can just respawn and make a new one". This can be said about a lot of craftable/modular items. My point is that I would value the spear more if it was harder to craft. (but seriously where does the rope come from? Plant fiber?)

Sorry if i'm giving undue feedback or I sound hateful, i'm just a little angry after seeing these exploits being done in such massive proportion. I'm angry because I love this game. the concept, the realism. And It kind of hurts to see it in its current state, and have to wonder what the future will bring. (I get fed up and quit from time to time but I keep coming back because I have hope for this game)

Long story short: Cheating is bad for everyone. There's always going to be some bad eggs in the community and for boredom sake please don't make the game any easier than it already is!

Some will, unfortunately, see your post as nothing but whining.  I, however, understand where you are coming from.  I agree wholeheartedly on the "instant gratification" you point out.  I don't agree with the spawning in with a rudimentary stone knife, soda, and food either.  As for guns, I think they are a little TOO RARE atm.  Military weapons especially, as they should be.  HOWEVER, if you brave a mil base, and are able to not get destroyed by zombies or a pack of wolves, give up an AK at least as a reward, and not just a pair of tactical gloves, tac vest, and a can of bacon.  Just the other day, after our regular server had an apparent wipe, we lost our camp of two large tents, one small tent, two barrels, one SVD, two AKs, a couple of handguns, and TONS of medical supplies and venison steaks.  All was left was our car.  Okay, that's the breaks.  Just grind it out again.  So, off we go in our car.  We find other car parts and jerricans.  We come across another car.  SWEET!  We fix it up, now we have two.  We find some camo netting, a genny, and a couple of other camp necessities.  We are taking our two cars across the map to pick up our friend on the coast that died earlier, and out of nowhere, another car passes us.  What are the odds, right?  Well, they stopped IMMEDIATELY, jumped out, and LIT.....US......UP.   Needless to say, we all died.  No reason.  Just a couple of d-bags with nothing better to do.  They may have just been defending their camp, assuming that it was near, but everyone seems to be SO EAGER to KoS, and completely eliminate the personal interaction aspect of the game.  What it has done is sour ME, and brings me to the conclusion that I, too, must now KoS.  I run with a group of guys from Nova Scotia.  They are good friends.  I never would have the experience I am having now if I, or THEY for that matter, just decided to shoot first.  Those that KoS are only playing HALF of the game.

Well i dont know what server you play on but im guessing its public. The thing is also. With modding tools etc alot of people are catering there servers towards the types of elements you explain. Or atleast pvp fest -no stamina + uber loot. This is why most people who have played dayz for a while, know and want a good experience in dayz, will play on a private hive. No server swapping. No bullshit and should always be 1pp. unlike what you have experienced here. It its better to just find your slice of dayz (private hive that fits you) You need to play on a hardcore server. 1st person perspective is how dayz should be in my oppinion. I feel so much safer on 1pp servers.

I'm currently on dayzdownunder - whitelisted community server and its been pretty damn great.

Try to get onto a whitelis server also

Man that was a long read and good too, but the only thing I’m gonna comment right now on is:

”Is Chernarus located in Texas? I know there was militia's before the outbreak but come on.”

In fact, Chernarus isn’t in Texas, it’s modeled heavily after the Czech Republic, and there is a huge backstory lore to how Chernarus got the way it is today from ARMA all the way up to DayZ - and it includes:

Chernarus became a Soviet Socialist Republic in 1922 after the end of the Russian revolution of 1917. After the demise of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991, Chernarus gained its independence.

Following this, Chernarus was established as a Republic and its army -- the Chernarussian Defence Forces -- took possession of former Soviet military installations and stockpiles. In 2009, it suffered from a civil war that left the country in turmoil, forcing it to seek help from Allied Nations and U.S forces.

- A Communist-Socialist faction committed war crimes and attempted cover-ups

- Russia gets involved thinking it was a nationalist guerrila faction and sends troops into Chenarus

- Russia supplies EXCESSIVE amounts of weapons to the Communist-Socialist faction who are actually against the government of Chenarus, which causes the civil war in Chernarus

- US and UN troops are sent to the southern coastal cities like Cherno to stop conflict and liberate the large cities

- A rogue government official in the Russian government sent money and support to the ChDKZ to deface and frame NAPA as the sole perpetrator of the terrorist attack in Russia, and sought to bring a war between Russia and Chernarus.

- Late 2012/Early 2013 the Outbreak happens, and the military of the US, UN, and Russia are overrun. The military tried to contain the outbreak and organised the systematic disposal of corpses (as can be seen at Kamensk Military Base).

- After the outbreak, the local military and civilian defenses were overwhelmed and disintegrated. All inhabitants either fled the country, were turned into Infected, or roam the desolated area as Survivors. The lawlessness led to a rise in banditry an overall lack of equipment and available food.

Most of this and more timeline can be found at the DayZ Wiki

I also like to think of a tiny little piece of backstory for when you “spawn” on the coast, is that like the introduction video - you actually awaken from being incapacitated for some reason, you’ve drifted upon the shore or whatever, and the reason that you start out with a stone knife, a can of soda, a flare, and bandages is that there is some sort of guardian angel or group of good guys geared to the teeth, fighting the bandits, roaming the shore. They patrol the beaches back and forth constantly, looking for the bambi’s who are not yet awakened to find what they’ve gotten themselves into and give them a starting gift to help them on their new journey of survival. Just a tiny bit to make sure that their first few moments are not all for naught. Their identities are unknown, and they have never been seen or found, but in their honor, some survivors do everything they can to emulate the unknown heroes and try to make Chenarus a better place, paying it forward to the new bambi’s that they encounter. Solnichniy has become a war zone and overrun by bandits who vow to keep the civil war going until the entire land of Chenarus is back to its Communist Socialist Soviet Era past. It is known far and wide to stay away from Solnichniy and is akin to The Dark Zone, and that only one day, when the heroes can form another Army of themselves will it be possible to Overtake the last stand of the Solnichniy factory with masses of geared soldiers always constantly standing guard to make sure the bandits don’t retain their foothold on their town.

So actually, no Chernarus isn’t in Texas, and there definitely wasn’t “just some militias before the outbreak” - you literally had almost 4 complete national armies in the country all at once and more weapons and artillery than you could count being supplied and stockpiled. ;)

School_map_co.jpg?version=1869c6e5470ba7

Haha, yeah, I know its set in the world of Arma. The DayZ map isn't Chernarus in it's entirety. It's actually the province (Oblast) of South Zagoria.

I was just trying to make a bit of a joke. I don't understand why civilians have semi auto pistols and Mosin Nagants in their houses? why do they have so many weapons?!

(i'm from Canada where gun laws are strict and very few people own them. Some players are from the UK where guns are practically non existent. lol)

Well. The Red Cross kinda answered my question. This report talks heavily on the availability of weapons in wartime and the effect it has on the numbers of civilian casualties: https://www.icrc.org/en/doc/assets/files/other/icrc_002_0734_arms_availability.pdf

"A major impetus driving arms sales to developing States has been the rapidly shrinking military budgets of northern industrialized countries. The lack of coherent policies for conversion of military production capacities to serve the civilian economy has meant that military industries with high production capabilities generated by the Cold War are competing intensively to develop new markets, particularly in the developing world."

"Even the former Czechoslovakia, which made a political decision in the early 1990s to cease arms exports, subsequently chose to re-enter the business for economic and other reasons. In addition, large quantities of surplus weapons have been transferred from the northern hemisphere to developing countries in the form of direct aid, subsidized sales or intra-alliance transfers. Ironically, these surplus arms are the by-product not only of reduced military budgets and forces in the industrialized countries but also of successful arms control agreements that have required members of NATO and the former Warsaw Pact to eliminate hundreds of thousands of weapons from their inventories."

"This flow of surplus arms is not likely to end soon – unless preventive action is taken without delay. In the coming five to ten years a new wave of surplus weapons and ammunition into developing countries can be expected to result from the need for funds in some States of the former Soviet Union and the modernization of arsenals in countries slated to join NATO or those aspiring to do so."

With Chernarus being a highly industrial state they would have had plenty of means of forging their own weapons. And they most likely would have had stockpiles from the Cold War. not to mention the other factions (And presumably arms traders) were pumping equipment and guns into the country.

Given that Chernarus has been in a state of disarray and its occupation is contested by 4 different militant groups there's a good chance many civilians wanted to get their hands on something that goes boom. They could've been obtained legally or illegally. And with this mass amount of guns, they would have been relatively cheap either way.

A quote from the same atricle:

"Because these weapons are mass manufactured for military, police and civilian use, there is an abundance of suppliers around the world. In addition, the existence of many tens of millions of such weapons, often recycled from conflict to conflict, has in many countries caused prices to drop well below the cost of manufacture. For example, a 1996 report indicated that in Mozambique and Angola an assault rifle could be purchased for less than $15 or for a bag of maize. In Uganda the price was reported to be the same as that of a chicken."

So following that logic and with the state Chernarus was in, there are theoretically a realistic number of guns in civilian areas. Now the only issue is that it's not a wider array of them. If people were stealing, buying, selling and making weapons there would have been at least a few people that could get their hands on assault rifles and other military gear.

As for the "militias" I was thinking of the National Party. (NAPA) Mainly because they were armed with more rudimentary equipment:

https://dayz.gamepedia.com/National_Party

"The National Party primarily consists of Chernarussian civilians who wear a combination of homemade camouflage with stolen military clothing. They often use masks to hide their faces to keep their underground network, they also use civilian vehicles mounted with military weapons and even use stolen armored vehicles from other factions."

Maybe there isn't too many guns. Maybe there's just too many people using them wrong. But the next time I pick up a Mosin, I'll have to wonder where it came from and how far it's traveled to get where it is now. Maybe a Russian arms dealer bought some cheap surplus and drove it down to the border to sell to the other side. Who knows?

“(but seriously where does the rope come from? Plant fiber?)”

Well obviously the rope came from the Rope Factory in Solnichniy duh, that’s why the bandits want to keep control of it - Rope has been a huge export product on the black market for Chenarus and its a very powerful economic stronghold as it’s the last remaining factory with its machinery still being functional and its prime location right on the coast and the bridge makes for efficient loading and unloading of supplies and money back and forth with various clientele not only across Chernarus but worldwide. Solnichniy Factory Rope has been known to be some of the most amazing high strength industrial rope and is world renowned for its great qualities compared to other competitors.

Wow, very intriguing read! I always wondered what the detailed lore of DayZ was, and where the hero term came from.

I’m going to have to read some more into it. Is the wiki the best place to gather “official” backstory?

yup! Everything from Chernarus’ history to geography to economy and politics - the wiki has basically everything about the lore of ARMA/DayZ universe and what it’s all about

Haha this sounds alot like the events that played out last night on US154 server in Electro,

I was running around looting and looking for and M4/KA and managed to find one eventually with a single full mag, so I thought I would also look for a mosin as I couldn't find any of those either and have a PU scope in inventory that I could attach, so on looting from NWAF I made my way looting towns going to Cherno, found a Mosin and heard quite a few gunshots at the docks in Cherno, so I decided to follow this on character that was running on the main road "I was scouting from the forest" from Chero to Electro and just as we get into Electro more gushots.

So in scouting from the forest at about 300-400yrds away I notice these two fully ghillied guys ontop of a three story building "ladder from inside the building to roof" and they were shooting at every player coming in from Cherno and the warter "fountain", so they had covered the main road entrance coming in from Cherno and the water "fountain".

So in all this I spot this other player running down the same main road to Electro with a KA in hand, Mil clothing and the BLUE helmet on trying to shoot at these guys from the road "Really? Blue helmet?", anyway thats no better than standing ontop of a grey building wearing a ghilie suit, that wont "camouflage" the player!.

So to get to the point was that I then noticed how these two ghilies are going at it from the roof,  so I move in a bit closer as I have the Mosin (with PU) and the M4 (With Acog) all with plastic bottle suppressors on, they then notice my character and start shooting in the same direction, now I decided to return one or two rounds, managed to hit both of them once and they fled into the building "Down the ladder".

Then they come up again to the roof and start searching that area "From the building roof" where the shots came from, I have already relocated up the hill in prone and watching them from the bino's, then they all move back into the building and dont come out, so now I'm still scouting the surrounding in case they try to flank but nothing, then after a while one of them "No Ghilie" comes out and fires one random round from the roof and then ducks back into the building, so then I realize that its a baiting tactic as they are try to get my characters location, so I move to a bush about 50yrd away and then a round goes off nearby, in the same bush hiding is one ghilie so I blast him with the M4 "full clip" , so either he is very good or he server hopped to the location because we were in an open field on a hill with one tree and bush in the middle of the field and nothing else, I would have noticed him taking up that position.

So then all I took was his SVD "First time owner" which was fully wrapped and three mags that only had 9 rounds in each of them "Possibly duped?" as the mags can take 10 rounds each, then waiting a while in the tree line to check if his buddies come collect the gear or not, but then just decided to leave the town with the SVD :)

I know it would not be easy, but would be nice if we could organize a "response force". When encountering KOS asshat players an alert is sent and multiple players converge on the server and respond to the location, taking action against these fools.

Yeah that would be pretty cool.
