Offline Testing Mode for DayZ

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

yesterday evening Prague time, some content creators on Twitch started streaming a modded, publicly available unofficial "offline mode" modification of DayZ 0.63 with the ability to spawn various unfinished assets.
While we do not officially support modding yet, we know that everybody is just super excited to finally try 0.63, and so this time around, we were OK with anyone using that modification and even with people live streaming the gameplay.

It's still unfortunate, as the build available for stress-testing is not yet in a shape that makes it an enjoyable game on its own - and that's why we're not releasing it fully on the Experimental branch - but we don't want to fight this. Quite the contrary - we've just pushed an update to our Stress Test branch on Steam that adds the option to play DayZ 0.63 in an official Offline Testing Mode without running community made modifications. The step by step instructions on how to launch the Offline Mode follow after this message.

We apologize for the confusion the community made offline mode modification created, and we're aware that the situation is less than ideal.

We'd like to resolve this situation in a positive way and give everyone the official way to experience the offline gameplay, as ultimately, we just want you to enjoy playing the new version of DayZ, even with all of its current imperfections. Thank you!

--------------

How to run the Offline Mode

  • make sure you're swicthed to the Stress Test branch of DayZ on Steam
→ right click DayZ in your Steam Library
    → click Properties
    → click the Betas tab
→ go all the way down to Enter beta access code to unlock private betas"
→ enter the ireallywanttotest opt-in access code
→ the "Stress Test Branch" is unlocked - select that branch in a drop down menu and let the client files download
  • download DayZ
  • restart Steam
  • right click on DayZ in the Steam library and select "Play DayZ Offline"

What to expect from the official Offline Mode

The offline mode ultimately lets you freely explore the entire Chernarus and all the basic DayZ gameplay features currently available in the 0.63 Stress Test build. Namely, that would be:

  • the new character controller and the new animation system
  • new user actions
  • the infected
  • animals
  • some crafting
  • simple, work in progress loot spawns
  • new gunplay and melee

Of course all of that, you can experience by yourself only. Please bear in mind that this is not the type of gameplay situation that we originally intended for the Stress Test build, and the game may behave in all sorts of weird ways when played offline.

What should you NOT expect from the official Offline Mode

The offline mode does not offer some of the options the community created modification offered. Namely that would be:

  • teleportation
  • free camera mode
  • ability to spawn any items (especially those not properly configured)
  • ability to execute scripting commands

We currently don't want to support these options, mainly because they break the game too much, and also because we still have to figure out how to unlock these options in a secured, reliable way, not by an improvised solution. The main goal is to let everyone experience the new DayZ gameplay, and in that respect, the official Offline Mode should be doing a much better job than any community modifications.

We are, however, still thinking of ways how to provide more options in the offline mode and will update you in case we have some updates.

Thanks and enjoy the offline Chernarus!

A difficult situation but you're making the best of it I suppose. Keep up the great work, In Beta We Trust!

So will this mean the rule about discussing the offline mode will be lifted as it is now officially supported? Just want to clarify.

I was already testing with the unofficial build but of course switched to the official now. It's amazing! And holy shit, the NWAF, it looked awesome and I didn't even recognize it.

I also noticed a big performance increase for me, so thanks and well done for that.

I will report back later, going to play a bit now haha.

few questions...
so if game crash, your character is not saved?

and if crash happen,is there crashlog somewhere and do devs want it to feedback tracker?

Was curious as well, so I tested it. The answer is no, your character doesn't get saved.

Cool!

I'm not sure how much I will use offline mode but it's a great addition and I can see why people are interested.

Thanks!

for some curious, it will surely break the tip of waiting. I will not test it, it's not what I'm looking for in DayZ .... I'd rather wait until it comes online, just to let the real feeling live.
That's just my opinion, you do not have to like that.

When i update my DayZ through Steam, and click on offline play, the game wont start. BattlEye will load up and is apparently booting up the game but after it closes, nothing happens. What may be the problem? I have verified game file integrity

I got two CTDs before it loaded properly. There was also a menu bug where I couldn't move the mouse to the top of the screen, fixed by alt-tabbing. Prone doesn't seem to work despite changing key bindings.

Also, I'm really not a fan of the right click to raise weapon thing. It's tricky to ADS when your gun is already raised. I might see if I can fiddle around with the control scheme to get something more intuitive.

I'll post on the feedback tracker later on.

EDIT

Space bar for raise weapon and RMB for zoom in works pretty nicely. Pressing space and RMB at the same time smoothly transitions straight into ADS, though letting go of space cancels it.

EDIT

Restarting after you die doesn't get rid of the black "you are dead" screen. Alt-tabbing fixes it. CORRECTION the screen just lingers for too long, even when you have control of your character in the background. If you wait a few seconds it should fade on its own.

-

Ladders feel nice. Very fluid.

-

I shot myself in the leg while prone on my back just to see if I could. I'm bleeding to death.

Default to prone is hold crouch key. You can double click hold RMB to ads or middle mouse to ads while right clicking. TBH i think its good.

Ah yeah, holding crouch works. I actually quite like that.

The aiming thing I really, really do not like. I'm generally not a fan of using MMB for anything but scrolling, and every game with ADS I have ever played has ADS as RMB. It doesn't feel intuitive, and DayZ is not the sort of game where you can afford to be fumbling around with the controls.

Is it a known issue, that opening cans of food can cause them to disappear and get stuck in your hands forever? I just died due to this.. simply could not eat.

Graphics look amazing, and the map reworks are fucking gorgeous! I love all the ambiance we have now, the little things that were added really make a difference.

Obviously we need the old control scheme back, but the issue with this build is some controls you cannot change or simply do not work.. I could get freelook to change buttons and work, and I could not remap my weapon controls for shit.

The sounds are nice.. seem like they need work, but love the new additions.

Ladders.. OMFG! Thank you BI.. finally.

Cool new buildings and towers.. love the new stuff.

I like the new swinging and fighting controls.. but it makes zeds totally useless.. you just bash on them until they drop, and it seems like they cant hit me if I do that?

It works the other way around as well. When the infected hits you, it stuns you/hits you back as well, making it very hard to fight multiple infected.
