Much as I appreciate your valiant defence of the dev team, I believe that your 'stricly no questions asked about the development because it's childish and self-entitled' policy may go a tad too far. ;) Still, 9/10 for good intentions.

the interim status of almost all solutions

Important point, yes - that's why it's often also hard to get a clear answer from the design team. This will remain true even during 0.63 Experimental, literally even today, there was a somewhat heated debate in the design team about the damage values given by various guns (or ammo types) for example. There will still be a lot to do to make DayZ a game, not a game in development. But that's the fun part, and I think everybody is looking forward to all that balancing and tweaking (as opposed to waiting on a new piece of tech being written, and redoing things that were already sort of good, but broken by these tech changes).

Sorry to break in again (without using big words)

BUT

If a game is DESIGNED FOR and made to appeal to a MINORITY of internet players, why do the MAJORITY of internet players get so het-up about it and complain so much ??

You won't hear me complaining that a BILLION people play Online Casino or Pokemon and those bring in the big money - I don't play there, I'm one of those STRANGE MINORITY players (maybe im a sick person? I play games with eg no big tits and no leveling so I must be abnormal?)  - I  play a game that is NOT designed to appeal to most people online - & Ive met some other GREAT STRANGE minority individual folk in this game too (gratz dudes! ) .. I like it  -  I like the game -  I DO NOT EXPECT everybody to like it and that IS ONE OF the REASONS i like it.  Sorry folks - but the more NORMAL you make this game, the less it interests me. I like to live on the fringe. Choose your own.

As for what version number it says in the corner when I log in I do not give half a short poke with a tie-died damn

Well, at this stage nobody can deny that DayZ has become a niche game for a niche number of players (official player count numbers don't lie I'm afraid). But even within this relatively small community there are different "factions"  of players who usually don't agree on much.

This fragmentation of views and opinions is clearly noticeable in the forum almost on a daily basis. One would think that after the mass exodus of players over the course of time, the ones still playing after more than 4 years of early access would be a tight knit, uniform and cohesive group of individuals with common objectives, but this is not the case. Why not?

Maybe the answer lies in the fact that this game has lost that broad appeal it originally had. Too particular, catering too much to a limited audience and getting lost in the pursue of an ever increasing and never ending search for more "realism" (which sometimes leads to heated debates about minor features elevated to a question of life and death for some).

There seems to be almost a race among some players, to prove their superior and often patronizing attitude on the "right or wrong" way to play DayZ. The game should punish and/or reward this type of play style, it's ok to do this but you're and idiot if you do that. I have previously compared this behavior to a religious fervor and a kind of "game dogmatism" which leads nowhere.

Only by regaining that initial excitement and increasing the player base substantially, can DayZ once again become a great game.

And there you are again with your numbers. 8 k viewers on a livestream of a dead game. Surely Bohemia view botted their own stream. And all those people talking in chat were also bots of course. This definitely says there is still interest in the game. When DayZ will reach its full potential and with modding, I'm sure the numbers will go up quite significantly. So the high amount of viewers on the stream and modding just debunked your "niche number of players" argument. But yes, Vanilla (not DayZ overall) will be for a niche number of players.

Also, there is no right or wrong way to play DayZ, it's a sandbox game. You can kind of compare it to a movie, the developers set the location, scene, genre, etc. but it is up to us to create the script. In the endgame, being a trigger happy person will be punished. At the moment the only punishment is dying to another player but in the future being in firefights all the time will punish you harshly. When you're injured you will be much slower meaning that you can't just run, gun and run from the infected after that. They will be able to catch you easily which might lead to your death. Eugeune said it himself on the stream and I'm glad the new system will put an end to the anti-player interaction playstyle. And the beautiful part about it, they didn't limit any playstyle. They made limping animations which are realistic. Combine that with the post-apocalypse survival genre and that will limit you in being the anti-player interaction person.

And of course the community isn't on the same line with everything, it's a sandbox after all. Everyone has their own goal, own playstyle and their own vision which makes it only logical that there are different "factions".

In my opinion, everyone should be able to play the way they want but it should be within the lore or the genre of the game. Again, the scene, location, genre, etc. is set but it is up to us to create the script.

Obviously the definition of niche game for a niche community depends on how much you subjectively interpret the numbers.

Taking into consideration the initial success of DayZ with its very large player count compared to the present one, leaves no doubt that this game has lost a lot of players and sadly, most of them will not come back.

I know that some people expect "miracles" from 0.63 and take almost for granted a massive return of players from then onward. Let's hope so, but I take nothing for given.

The stream was interesting but 8 k viewers is not exactly a record breaking amount on YouTube. Consider also that probably half of those views came most likely from people who normally play DayZ already, so the "net gain" is rather modest.

So the DayZ numbers, in the greater scheme of things regarding this game, are limited and I would still claim very niche.

The existence of different "factions" on the forum and their often rabid statements cannot be simply swept away by saying that everyone has their own goal and play style, it goes much deeper than that. To me it's a sign of a split and factious community.

In any case, time will tell. Let's patiently wait and see.

Regards

As far as online views for the stream, it's not really a figure to be looking at. It doesn't matter who could and could not make it at that precise time. There is that recording on youtube and twitch, and there'll be enough gaming youtubers who support Dayz and who will share the video for thousands of their subscribers who do want to see it, loving or hating the game. One of them is M1ND3R who posted it last night with several thousand views already.
