Arrow heads .. as they were around in this region

Recommended Posts

Having the ability to find and or craft stone arrowheads like the stone knife . would be great ..say searching creek beds and around lakes and ponds in gravels for arrowheads as there are areas that ancient man in these regions would have spent time crafting such items  or washed down from camps .. then using the found or crafted flint arrowheads in the crafted arrows you make from sticks and feathers from the chickens  .. see this link for arrowheads found in russia http://www.sciencephoto.com/media/447043/view
These could also be a tradable form of currency.

What does this have to offer over bone arrows, other than being 'easier' to get a hold of?

Bone arrows in a real world situation would be less lethal .. have less penetration of jackets , etc bone is relatively soft/brittle .. this suggestion is more about more realistic solution over bone .. most of all chicken bones .. as far as making and arrow they would be junk .. cow bones might be better solution .. but a bone arrow head in reality would be pretty much worthless.. of course stone arrows would prob be best suited for a long bow .. over that measly twig bow lol.
But of course with scrap metal all over .. it would be even better to craft metal arrowheads from scrap metal..

No, no they wouldn't.

Bone arrowheads are just as effective as flint or metal arrowheads. In fact, there is very little difference in penetrative ability (and therefore, lethality) between bone, stone and metal arrowheads.

The only differences between the three are 1) ease of manufacturing, and 2) ability to keep the heads the same weight, which has a direct effect on arrow accurac

Bone arrowheads, to be perfectly blunt, suck massive donkey dick to create, especially in a situation without power tools. I have made a bone arrowhead in real life using hand tools, and it took me several hours of filing and shaping.

Stone arrowheads, if one even knows how to knapp stone, are still a pain in the ass. You need the 'right' stone, and they are difficult to get the same weight. They also almost-always break when they penetrate an animal.

Metal arrowheads are easy to make (take spoon or scrap metal, hammer flat, cut to shape and file an edge on it), easy to get the same weight (meaning the arrows are more accurate), and more available. You can find scrap metal almost everywhere, while workable bone and stone are harder to find.

Yeah people are pretty squishy. I doubt there'd be much difference between a bone arrowhead and a steel arrowhead when it comes to punching through somebody's chest. Now when it comes to armour that's a different story, but I think plate armour has fallen out of use in recent years.

Wooden, stone, bone and composite arrows will probably do for arrow types. Bone and stone should be pretty much identical, with wooden arrows being fairly ineffective. Finding ancient stone arrowheads sounds incredibly far-fetched. Perhaps the crafting time between stone arrows and bone arrows could be different or something. Being able to craft metal arrowheads might reduce the importance of composite arrows somewhat, unless crafted crafted metal arrows are less accurate or something. Nothing you can craft should be as good as something you have to loot, except in certain circumstances (the improvised backpack being superior to the child's briefcase, for example.)

I actually think that both arrows and spears could have two versions:

1) Improvised. As-is, with a sharpened wooden tip. Requires no tools or loot (asides from the sticks, feathers, and sharpening tool), and as such, would be immediately available to a freshspawn. Lowest damage, lowest accuracy, shortest range

2) Advanced: With a sharpened metal tip. Requires the same as above, but with the addition of scrap metal, a file or a stone, and some rope. Middle damage, middle accuracy, middle range. The best you can craft

3) Composite: As-is. Highest damage, highest accuracy, longest range. Found only as loot.

So, this would require the ammunition affecting the accuracy of the weapon. Which would be a nice feature.
