Facial expressions

Recommended Posts

All these survivors running around and all with neutral, emotionless faces. When in combat your character should display an angry face to whomever he/she is fighting. When you've got a broken bone/fracture your character should express pain.

Just a thought of mine that I've not seen on the forums yet and feel would be a good addition to the game to make it a bit more realistic rather than having everyone have the same facial expression all the time.

Would be extremely difficult to add this in a decent way. Better just let us finally design our faces sims like...

The problem with this: The whole purpose of facial expressions is to show which emotion is present. Now you cannot really read the mind of the player nor can you tell from whats happening ingame. So the survivors face would end up showing a random emotion instead which kind of defeats the purpose. What I can see working is pain but anger/fear/sympathy/happiness etc. are simply too dependent on the player.

As written above a better way to deal with "everyone looks the same" is adding more faces/a face generator of some kind. Naturally some of them will look more friendly while others will look more grumpy. There  could also be a "smile" gesture to show others you are happy.

its not a bad idea but I'm just happy you see mouth movements when using ingame chat.. I doubt we would see expressions.. I would prefer damage marks, scrapes, blood etc before facial expressions myself tbh

Is definitely a good idea, just not this early, maybe in late alpha or even beta.

Yes I think they will do something with aesthetic additions.. imaging seeing a bandages on a particular limb that has taken damage.. mind you we wouldnt see this for 2/3 years down the track maybe even later.. DayZ will live on for years to come.. 10+ atleast ! ! !

yeah need to warm this topic up again.

the latest shown gifs/videos in their experimental update show how much these puppet faces may distract from a proper interaction with another char. it sure destroys the immertion quite a bit.

Here the Feature Request in the Feedback tracker.

In the examples below you can see why some basic examples need to happen eventually. the chars look like from a decade ago w/o any form of facial expressions.
maybe start with blinking and later squinting when having heavy weather or when having dusky/dawny light.

maybe basic good mood (fit and healthy) expression, basic bad mood expression (wounded) or focused expression (aiming, shooting).

maybe it's possible to make the eyes follow one's mouse cursor, so that others see what/where you are looking at.
